Early ones, at least, ran oil in the swivels, but grease in bearings. Common to leave stub seal out and run the lot in oil, mainly for the wheel bearings.

If swivels were filled with staight grease, i would be tempted to add 100ml or so of 80w90 in there as well, which is more or less what one shot is.

Mine had a strange noise/ clunk in the front, which seems to have gone since i adjusted swivel preload chasing a steering issue.

I wouldn't leave the seals 'leaking' for too long tho.
While the grease may stop stuff coming out, it won't stop stuff getting in .. which is where I have my problems with my RRC years back.
Now learned the hard way .. if you want to keep it for a few years, fix the seals .. otherwise look to off load it once all the incoming water turns the unrusted metal parts into rusted scrap metal!

When I changed my seals I remember them to be easy work .. about an hour or so each side.
15-20 odd years ago I wasn't the lazy, unfit, physically unable oaf that I am today tho .. and not really looking forward to guide the axle assembly off and on again any time soon .. but not a hard job to do.

Because I didn't have the (swivel)ball replaced as they were horrendously expensive part then, nor had the chrome redone .. it took maybe a couple of years for the new seals to start leaking again.

But from my last experience with my RRC(same design) I'd recommend that you do change them some time soon.

Agree, not a hard job and chances are the wheel bearings are due for a repack anyway.

Definitely had a case of DBS (dry ball syndrome) it's quieted down a fair bit but I still have a bit of noise at the wheels. The brake pedal sometimes needs a 2nd pump to brake proper so I think I'm gonna check my hub nuts for looseness. Last time I had a bearing go the brake loosening up was the 1st sign. Hopfully the nuts just loose and hasn't disintegrated like the last one.
I'm hoping because I've got sunnies I can check the hubnut without taking the wheel off it needs to be a quick job if I'm doing it tonight bloody rain.
New seals for the swivels will happen hopfully in the coming weeks and if the bearings are shot I'll be pinching them off the series3 for now it's not gonna need them lol.

Do the lot all together man and save yourself the pain.
Seals and bearings at the same time. Dump that one seal so you can oil your bearings and done.

    Move onto the next leak

I would do them both but the bearings shot I gotta change it now. Had **** loads of free play in the wheel im pretty sure the caliper was holding the wheel on. I've already started it just gotta steal the bearings off the old girl. Might do both sides for tge hell of it. It has nice looking timkens so i should get some time out of them. Hopfully the races arent stuffed. I musnt have done the nut up enough when I changed them before ohh well live and learn. Considering it's only like 6nm I don't know how it wouldn't have been.

    Cheers

Might not have sent them home properly.
I always tighten them far more than specs till they start to bind then back them off 1/4 of a turn. Sort of anyway. Just a feel thing but i certainly overtighten wheel bearings then back them off.

They'll probably last you at least a couple of thousand klms ... as mine had done with the noise they were making. But only making loud noise when turning at over 80k/h(through 80k/h bends).
Probably could have done a lot more than the ~2K klms I did(about 3 months or so, around town).

Wasn't game to go for any long drives tho .. one trip to Ballarat and by the time I got up there, they were making loud noises all the time. Cooled down for a few hrs, then the drive home .. same deal by the time I got home.

Still felt too lazy to do them and finally relented a month or so later.

IIRC, it was only one race on each of the LHS bearings that was badly scored; That is one was fine, the other worn. I posted some pics somewhere here .. maybe in the 'what did you do to your D1' thread.
    No leaks tho.

Well ive I got the old bearings out and cleaned the hub, the races are nice and smooth so I'll keep them. Only the outer one seems wrecked but I'll definitely do both. Its not as bad as the last one I done, the bearing fell to bits last time this ones still intact. I drove on the last one for ages the wheel was on a lean when I finally changed it. Took me ages to realise I'd done a bearing.
I know I definitely installed them correctly I sussed it out before hand back it off 1/4 turn and all that.
I might change grease I can't remember what I used but I have some trusty HTBG in the shed which has never failed me.

    Cheers Jim
