l took off the panel this arvo, to find this
well it turns out that it wasn't really as bad as it looked, it wasn't to deep and the only place that water was getting in was from the rust around that little bloody grommet on the side, after some cleaning, a little grinding, a little converter, slikaflex, and some strategically placed biyseal i think its all good from here on

ps the finished slikaflex job was a lot neater than the pic, l was half way through then and after i had finished at around 9.30 i had forgotten to take a pic of the end!!

After seeing Jessie_xa's 98 model Disco with it's guards off I'd say rust like that is pretty common. Makes me worry about my 94 model

His rust was more concentrated under that hole next to the wiring harness.

have you looked under your panels as yet? could be interesting !!

yhea thank god l got it early it was only surface stuff but it should hold for a few More years now i also slikaflexed the holes in the box section so as no water can settle in the end of it so so i will see after Ive let it really set before l give it another really good test cross fingers

No I haven't taken my guards off yet. Just tipped some lanolin through the hole. How long did it take you to get them off. Easy job?

pretty easy just use a systematic approach and alls good!

the things to be carefully about are where the finishing panel under the headlight meet the guard with a rubber grommet! and if you've never had them off before you have to gently break the silicon seal along where the rear of the panel meets the body with the four bolts, it takes a bit of force to break without putting to much force on the panel !

Yes please! I'm doing my daughter's in a week or so.



In the photo above, see that plastic bung to the right and below the large hole (plenum chamber drain), my daughter's car was leaking quite a bit of water around that and intot eh cabin. I sealed it with silicone but if the guard was off, I'd use bitumen paint, e.g., Ormanoid. I was also travelling so I didn't have bitumen paint with me.

Also, see the little plastic socket that is poking through the panel in line with the rust stain near the door pillar, water also leaks past that into the cabin. In her case, the socket was split - I put a pic up on the forum a while back. Hang on..

Ahh, here it is and where it is located from inside the cabin:





If you are removing the mudguards, I recommend sealing the backs of these as well (plus any other bungs or plugs you find).

yhea as you can see in this pic i did seal the little plug really well !!
did you seal the big hole that drains the the plenium drain ?

l also replaced all the vent filters with biyseal, im sure the fact that the old ones were falling apart, had something to do with the excess water getting in the plenium channal!!
