I think it went to the underside of the windscreen drain area. It is very long and would almost reach to the bottom of the guard.
I can't see pics at work but I see from your sig line that yours is a pre-update model so it is different around the plenum area.

The little pipe you mention is a drain pipe. I think it is another drain for the under windscreen area.

    As for step by step:

    1. Remove the blinker by pulling on the spring on the back of it.
    2. Remove the small nut and bolt that hold the plastic grille part that sits under the blinker.
    3. Remove the nut and bolt that holds the bottom edge of the guard to the plastic channel that runs along under the doors and guard.
    4. Remove the bolt that is on the bottom side of the guard in front of the tyre (above the bullbar/bumper wing).
    5. Remove the 4 bolts that are visible when you open the door.
    6. Remove the six? screws that run across the top of the guard under the bonnet lip.
    7. Reach up behind the guard and pop out the blicker and remove it.
    8. Gently wiggle the guard off. It is held on by silastic that is under the top screws and inside door area bolts.
    9. Be aware that the guard extends a small amount up behind the plastic panel on the top edge near the door. You need to slide the guard forward a bit and then lift the bottom edge up to get around the plastic.

The driver's side will have an antenna to contend with too on some models.

Refit is reverse of above. I didn't use any more silastic but did put lanolin on the newly exposed metal where some of the silastic had come off.
Also pay attention to panel gap. Put all the screws/bolts in loose at first to make sure they line up and then as said pay attention to panel gap.

I did the passenger side front guard in about 1 hour all up. Didn't do the driver's side guard as I figure with the minimal rust I found on this side it can wait a week or so.

Don't worry about it. It was a piece of cake. Just thought I'd quickly write something as it is good to read stuff like that when you are at work contemplating a job on the weekend
