When I contacted Ashcroft Transmissions and LRA regarding a V8 box to Tdi, I was told that in no way are the gear ratios different, its just the valving that's totally different. If you can find a Tdi governor and Tdi valve block, the V8 ZF can be changed to a Tdi ZF at expense.

    G'Day mate,

Enjoy the Disco, I have a 98 TDi, your mates will give you flack over buying one, but they can be a great vehicle with regular maintenance.

This would have to be the best site for info and money saving ideas that you will find, use the search button for what you are after and you will find a wealth of info.

I was going to purchase a new diff seal about a year ago, a search on here proved invaluable, I checked my breather pipe, problem fixed no cash spent!

    Cheers Andy.

You'll need to do a slight guard cut if you go bigger than 30".

Yep, even with a 2" lift, it is only at the back bottom of the guard and around 10mm or so, it will rub on articulation.

I'm supprised a D1 owner that has done it hasn't come in and said something and posted a pic by now.

I have a D1 (auto V8) and i fitted 245/75/16's which is a smidgen smaller than a 31" tyre and it fouled the back of the rear guards on artic. I cut about an inch off the guards and now it clears.

trace a horizontal line from the top of the moulding on the lower rear guard across to the wheel arch. From that point on the wheel arch, draw a line down to the bottom of the guard about an inch in from the edge. Cut it with a thin wheel on a 4 inch grinder and bobs ya uncle

I wish I had a pic for ya, but its at the mechanics with a gearbox issue
