Everyone that i know with a D1 has had to do a guard cut too fit 31s or over, your D1 may have already been done maybe.

trace a horizontal line from the top of the moulding on the lower rear guard across to the wheel arch. From that point on the wheel arch, draw a line down to the bottom of the guard about an inch in from the edge. Cut it with a thin wheel on a 4 inch grinder and bobs ya uncle

I wish I had a pic for ya, but its at the mechanics with a gearbox issue

lo I've got the box out of mine to at the moment

mine wouldnt change up gears either unless you did it manualy with about 2000rpm and likewise the rear main seal is leaking so its getting done as well.

years ago I would have done it myself but having moved interstate recently and now have no shed or workshop where we are staying, I am buggered for doing too much until we buy our own place on acreage with a BIG workshop....

Hi I had a 1994 V8 Auto And now have a TDI 5spd and have driven the auto tdi and i prefer the control of the 5 speed behind the tdi. My TDI 300 has 260000 on it now and have been going to replace it for last 100000 but i have not found a vehicle that justifies change over price. I as previously mrntion have oil changed every 5000 and filters. Have placed a very expensive synthetic oil in gear box which has made it quieter and easyer to change gears. Check all water/heater hoses radiater hoses etc as if they are old they could break/leak. Rear rubber coupling on drive shaft to diff can be cracked this will cause vibration and possible falure. If your d1 was serviced properly all should be good, but it does not hurt to get a service and a report on what they think needs to be fixed and then you can look at what you can do yourself.

From what ive experieneced and seen timing belts, coolant issues and big ends are what limit the life of these donks. So in light of that:

If its at 290 I would prob drop the sump and replace the big end shells...
assuming they are original they will be knackered. easy job.

Some may argue the headgasket if it hasnt already been done?

Tbelt as you mentioned, put on a water pump and renew hoses whilst the front is off.
Radiator wouldnt hurt a rodding... and if nothing else fit a low coolant alarm.
tdi are good at dropping their water and dont last long without it. Best insurance you can do for a tdi.

    have fun and enjoy!
