It does cost to install the LPG but I was $1500 out of pocket which I recouped very quickly. That is a lot less than the extra I would have had to have paid for a 300Tdi Disco when I bought my V8 so still ahead there. Plus like I said, the engine you choose needs to suit your style. No one bases it purely on their wallet. Financial figures are there to back up the decision we have already made not to help make the decision in the first place really.
Fair enough. So for 59L how far do you get on gas? For my TD5 I get approx 678.5km.

Big Guy quoted on gas I get 230k's per 59l.. Is this the distance most gas cars can achieve?

I get an indicated 250-260kms per 55L fill. At the moment that lasts me about two weeks. Normally would be one week.

I base my calculations on actual though which is 5% less kms on my road tyres.

No the seats sit a fair bit higher than the cover when folded down. I thought of making it flat like you described but as it is I can only just open the lid fully on my 80L Waeco fridge.

I used to have the seats out completely and was going to make another false floor for the forward bit but I really don't have the space to store the seats when they are out (townhouse) and I use the seats reasonably often anyway.

We get around 650ks to a tank highway driving on our v8 manuel D1. It does a consistant 13.5l/100. It seems to be most economical cruising at 115kmh as its in its sweet spot. We mainly bought it for travelling around on weekends which it does perfectly. I love the power of a v8 and would never run a deisal unless i was doing outback desert driving. I like the fact of cruising on the posted speed limit and not having to go down through the gears to get up hills. Our disco drinks less on hwy runs than my previous 2.8 hilux deisal. Then when you add in the extra 25 cents a litre for deisal the v8 wins hands down. Obviously it drinks much more around town but it doesnt bother us as a tank will last around 3 weeks as my missus doesnt have to drive in peak hour traffic to get to work. I love my V8's as we have the disco which is 3.9 v8 and a hsv clubsport which is 5L v8 and a hsv maloo which is a 6L v8. Funny thing is the 6L is the most economical as it returns 8.5 l/100 highway driving!
Ive recently bought a long range tank for the disco which will increase its range to around 890k's to empty. Thats more than enough for us.
One thing i might add is if you expect economy from any car dont buy an auto. Manuels will always drink much less as theres a lot less power lost through the converter.

    Thanks everyone

Thanks for the replies everyone. I think i am getting the lower end of everyones estimates, most of the time. Approximately 490ks from a not another drop in the tank, tank full. This is ok with me for i have the joy of listening to that great little V8 and the torque that it develops. I use mine on work expeditions (hauling fibre optic cable) occasionally and it has proved quite handy at pulling 10t e.w.p out of bogs. Love that little 3.9.

No difference between petrol and LPG - the joys of gas injection.

Check out the LPGAustralia web site trip planner

Shows you the distance between LPG stations.

For 59L I will get approx 678.5 km. I am not an economical driver, so my TD5 uses around 11.5L/100km of fuel.
At say $1.50 per litre of diesel, 59L costs me about $88.00
This means it costs me 13c / km to operate a TD5.

How does this compare to gas?
Did you pass Maths at school?

59L does not even break the 600km barrier given your 11.5L/100.
Diesel costs at least $1.70per L.

Diesels are great, don't get me wrong but gas is cheaper to run and puts out less polutants.
If you have an ultra modern diesel the particulate filter and tightly tuned exhaust will make sure its way more enviromentally friendly.
Now take the exhaust off and put on a 3inch special job because we are experts at tuning etc and the emmisions get worse.

    So there you have it.

Gas is cheaper no matter how you look at it, it is however the most uneconomical because it uses more per km.

Gas is a by-product and should be even cheaper.
We (Australia) sells LPG at 3c/L to our overseas trading partners.

Natural gas which hopefully we can soon convert our cars to and just plug in at home and fill up.
We have huge reserves of it here in Australia for an estimated 500 years.

Imagine, come home plug her in at night and since its slow filling it will take a while but our running costs will be cut even further, way further.

Bring it on, clean burning with vast reserves and save to fill at home.

So when cvamping, do you plug the barby into the car to cook dinner, or plug the car into the barby when you run out of gas
    Seriously, that's a conversionI'd be into.

Well, now that you mentioned it, you can make an adapter and fill your lpg bottle off the gas tanks.
LPG fitters do it to drain tanks. Not strictly legal but thats half the fun.

Now we laugh about cleaner cars, in 10-15 years we laugh about how we were ignoring them.

All the diesel guys could install a gas injection system, cleaner burn, better economy and more power. You want more????

    Hey big guy,
Gotta pick you up on a couple of points.
Whilst LPG may have once been a "by product" with half a million vehicles running around Aus using it, I think you can safely retire that saying

Its become so popular that there is now a dedicated autogas which is 50% propane & 50% butane so, unless you are in Qld or Tas,( they only get propane for servo's) forget using bowser gas for your BBQ.
BTW it might have been 3 cpl to sell it overseas in 1968 but we import it nowadays. Also Aus went world parity in 1991. Which means we sell it for what we can- around $800/ tonne or 40cpl. but why export when you can sell here for even more. The longevity of those two out of date statistics never ceases to amaze me.
