Is the offroad clause worth it?

I am about to renew my insurance with TCIS brokers and Allianz. Similar to others here, the premium for 2009/10 (Nov) was $1400 for $25k, with one windscreen per year. I was prepared to bear some extra cost for the benefit of the off road clause which specifically states it covers any legal off roading activity anywhere in Australia, including below high water mark. When I have contacted other insurance companies the person on the end of the phone says they cover 4wding activities but are vague about what's not covered and their PDS's seem inconclusive.

Does anyone have any experience with either TCIS/Allianz or other insurers which indicates that the clause is worth the extra premium?

    RACV

Hey guys just got off the phone to RACV I have my 2 cars and home with them, I asked about what is covered and to add new bullbar to car.
    Was told.

Dont need to tell them what Mod's are on the car "Any of them" They price it up at the time of claim.

Vehicle is covered eveywhere that the vehicle is capable of going.......i.e if its an off road car road, track or dirt hill your are covered, if you have snok your covered in water.......

I dont know if I like the idear of thinking your covered for everything then claim is knocked back because of a home made bar is not vic roads legal

Wow... I'm not sure why your insurance quotes are so expensive. I've got mine with AAMI (99 V8) for about 750 a year. Full comprehensive, covered for anywhere I take it.

Mind you, I don't have any finance on the car, no under 25's can drive it, it's for private use, and have my other car and home insured with them too, so I imagine that it would make a slight difference.

Might pay to shop around a bit more fellas!

One can only assume that it is because he is a member of RACV. The level of membership, as well as length may make a difference - I don't know.

I am with Shannons (car was a personal import) $550 with max no-claims bonus and both drivers over 50 (blimy showing my age now )
What I can't understand is why insurance is so expensive. You pay the major part (third party) with the Rego. So it's $300+ for CTP and around $500 for fully comprehensive. That $800+ per annum even with full no claims and mature drivers, and no multiple vehicle discounts.

I guess it varies from state to state as to what the rego actually covers. In Victoria, the rego covers you for damage you might cause to an individual, in terms of rehabilitation e.t.c. It in no way covers you for damage to your own vehicle or another.
    Insurance is completely seperate altogether!
