    Get a tombie ECU upgrade

I was a bit hesitant getting an ECU upgrade, wondering how much difference it would make.

I would recommend a TRT upgrade. Tombie's upgrade is great, the fuel economy is better when driven as previously, there is little / no turbo lag, and when I use the extra power, the TC light sometimes comes on from wheel spin (fuel economy suffers when I do this though).

I now go up the hill to Maleny at 3,000 rpm, and at the same speed, whereas previously it was closer to 4,000 rpm. The only warning with any upgrade - you'll get used to the extra power and want more....

    Hi bn172,
I've had a Davis chip upgrade for couple of years; and had an upgrade of the upgrade for no cost a few months ago. Performance difference is fantastic. No need to change down from 5th uphills fully loaded. Most recent change improved the low end power, and hence takeoff, too. Overall no change to fuel economy, if anything a little improved but it depends greatly on how you drive. Most recent change results in a little smoke at low revs and heavy right foot.

When I looked into it, the recommendation was that the rechipped versions were better than the plug in upgrades. The former completely redesign the mapping whereas the latter only try to fool the existing mapping and aren't always as successful. I'm not an expert here and may be using the wrong terminology but I believe there 3 mappings on the TD5, 2 fuel and another(?) which the Davis rechipping redesigns all 3. Not all do, apparently but I have no info on Tombie's. Perhaps those with better knowledge could explain a little more.

I've done some research into the ECU upgrade from Graeme Cooper, TRT and the Davis chip ... seems to me that there is just as much chance of having exhaust manifold issues with the upgrade ... as without.

If I could find the $600 to get mine done by Tombie ... and do it without the missus noticing ... I'd jump at it. There's just too many positives and there's so many guys out there raving about how good it is!

Disco Emu,your probably right mate,I've allways been a bit wary of turning up diesels but I think the Td5 is slightly de tuned ,and under stessed.I'm only after some quicker throttle reesponse (like my old D1) and a tad more torque would be nice, also, being single,I only have myself to argue with!!!

I removed my egr and and had a small but noticeable improvement in power at low revs. Turbo lag improved significantly. Not sure what you mean by exhaust manifold problems but nothing I'm aware of so far. I've also not had smoothness problems, either before or after the changes. I drive a manual so I'm not sure it that makes a difference as well.

keen to go out for a day trip.

    Hi Ben,
With the inlet manifold when you say you gave it a clean up did you give it a bit of a port and polish or just get rid of sooty deposits. I used to match all my ports in the old days with holden sixes made a huge difference same with exhaust manifolds. Let me know howe your ECU upgrade goes I am looking at doing same when I recover financialy from fitting new T/fer case with CDL and 2 key fobs.

    gday mike,
just cleaned the soot out, they are a pretty good casting.no need to port & polish.the gunk would have been about 8 to 10mm thick so it will flow alot more air. also cleaned as much gunk out of the ports too.just with a rag soaked in degreaser & my finger!! just got back from bronsons place(cheers mate) he was kind enough to let me have a drive of his chipped disco(trs). wow what a difference.
    cheers ben
