Hill decent does a better job than the operator simply because we cannot brake separate wheels and it can. I find my V8 manual has excellent low range first braking and can carry a very low idle speed without stalling - that helps.

When I slot the vehicle back into high range from low the HDC will chime its head off until you turn it off. Apart from that it will not chime going into locked centre diff.

    Cheers

My D2a chimes 3 times when I engacdl and then again when I disengage it. This I think is normal, just a reminder that it's in or out.
Haven't heard of the problem of continous chiming though sorry.
Very interesting info re the high temp warning.

MMMMM...............wondering if I can get my 2001 to do that

Also wondering if its anything to do with the fact the "OPs" D2 is a year 2000, and its been retro fitted and the chime is because "maybe" the SLABS feed has not been cut...........? but thinking about it my friends is like that and his does not chime......mmmmm.....

Have just talked with British 4x4 autos in Adelaide as they activated the CDL for me. They are a bit confused as to the cause too. I am taking the car in next week to check for fault codes and hopefully find out what may be the culprit. If the answer may assist others I will post it once I know.

Oh, re the suspension, I rang Dobinsons and asked which springs should be in the rear of a D2 to achieve a 2" lift. I have spring product code C51-017 which they sated is not the right spring. They say it should be either a C51 -022 or -027 as per their list on their website which is used by companies/individuals for ordering. It appears that the 4x4 shop that installed mine ordered the incorrect springs so I am talking to them about that. C51-017s are not recommended for a D2 anywhere in their documentation. Once again thanks for the responses to date.
    cheers

    Hi Jack,
Just read your post as I have just returned from a weekend 4wding at the Coorong and experienced exactly the same issue that you are describing with your CDL.

I fitted my CDL kit about 5 years ago and have had no issues with it until this weekend. Once engaged I get the CDL light on the dash and an initial chime to let me know it is engaged. Everything is OK but then for no apparent reason I get 1, 2 or more chimes comming from the car. I did notice on one occasion that the CDL dash light looked off but that could have been due to sun reflection as I didn't notice it again.

Before I go messing around with linkages and sensors did you manage to get to the reason for the chiming?

I noticed you spoke with British 4x4, did you get a resolution from them? Also I assume you are in Adelaide (as I am) is that correct?

Hope you managed to get your CDL issue sorted out and can maybe shine some light on why it may be happening.

On another note; are you able to "disable" your traction control by engaging CDL first and then starting the car? I have read about this "technician mode" and heard of other drivers being able to perform it via the correct sequence however I cannot seem to be able to replicate it and wondered if you were able to.

    Regards.

    Stewie.

I find 1st low in the auto too slow sometimes and 2nd is the way to go, and this is on some steep hills aswell. Only use the HDC to give the ABS a work out.
I just got my CDL installed - can not wait to get out and try it.

The shop that fitted my CDL explained to me that if you engage Diff lock THEN start the vehicle you disable the ABS and Traction control. Your dash will have the "3 amigos" appear as well. They said that this was best to do this if you were going to be beach driving or trying to go up a slippery slope where you wanted to maintain momentum, as traction control works against you in these circumstances.

As far as I'm aware you'll only get the chimes when you engage the CDL if you have a SRD000150 or SRD000070 SLABS ECU fitted. These were originally fitted to MY03 and MY04 D2's respectively. The SRD500070 ECU may have been fitted to earlier D2's as a fix for ABS Sensor related faults resulting in the Three Amigos.

If you wait for the dash warning lights to go out, then start the car, you'll hear three warning chimes if one of the later ECU's is fitted. This indicates that an ABS self test has successfully completed and doesn't occur with the original D2 ECU's.

If this is the case it will explain why you don't get the "technician mode". This is only applies to the SLABS ECU's fitted to pre-facelift D2's, and is actually a reduced performance mode which disables ETC and degrades ABS, EBD and HDC performance. Locking the CDL with the later ECU's enables revised parameters for ETC, ABS, EBD, and HDC to suit the locked differential.
