    TD5 Head Gasket

AS has been sugested by a few masters on this site I am going to fit a new head gasket before we do our trip up North later in this winter vehicle has done 200,000ks. Can anyone tell how much a kit will cost to do this myself.
I believe I will require head, inlet ,exhaust manifold/ gaskets, new head stretch bolts, steel dowels to replace the plastic ones and anything else that should be done while its off.
Would the head need decoke valve grind? or other reconditioning and does the timing chain or cogs normaly need replacing or adjusting while the heads off.
I would also like to know how much anyone else has paid to get this done by a workshop.
    Any help here greatly apreciated.

Mike ,I dont know what model vehicle you have, but you might be interested in this technical bulletin from LR. [haven't worked out how to download this stuff yet, so have to copy it]
model- discovery series 2, defender [ld], all td5 derivatives within vin ranges: d2[ 02 model year]- 2A736340 to 3A793895

    defender [ 02 model year] 2A622424 to 3A 647705

    CYLINDER HEAD LOCATING DOWELS
td5 engines fitted to vehicles in the above VIN ranges are fitted with plastic dowels to locate the cylinder head onto the cylinder block.Land Rover engineering has introduced steel locating dowels from the following VIN numbers-d2- 3A793895
    defender - 3A 647705

If a cylinder head is removed from a vehicle in the above VIN range, the plastic dowels must be replaced with new specification steel dowels.
CAUTION-Td5 derivatives prior to the above VIN ranges must not, under any circumstances, be fitted with the new steel dowels. If steel dowels are fitted to to earlier engines, cylinder head cracking may result. Bob

    yea maybe,,
but the diesels you are remembering didnt have to shift 2.5 tonnes, didnt have to run on low sulpher, didnt have to conform to Euro pollution standards, didnt have a turbo hanging off, and didnt produce anywhere NEAR the power and torque output from a TD5,,

theres a reason stationary engines run forever--

Just Landrover huh? Any modern diesel as Pedro said is in the same boat...

And the TD5 does a lot better than a Nissan 3.0L

I know this what LR recommends. But I have seen heaps of TD5's fitted with steel locating dowels and had no problems. Has anyone seen cracking of heads due to fitting steel dowels to early TD5's or is this a myth from LR not to pay head gasket claims on early TD5's
