Question Can't remove TD5 engine cover - suspect nut has come loose

This afternoon I went to remove the engine cover from the TD5 as there is an engine oil leak and diesel fuel leak underneath there. I undid the two bolts on the passenger side above the exhaust manifold without any issue, however, the bolt on the drivers side that fits into the inlet manifold/diesel fuel cooler bracket is just spinning. I suspect that the nut has come loose from the bracket (as I assume it is welded to the bracket and that the welds have let go). I can't find a spot to get a spanner behind under the cover to hold the nut.
Anyone experienced this before and how did you solve it? Cut it?

After having cut the head off that bolt on my almost new TD5 (the dealer wouldn't risk damaging the cover!), others have reported that the bolt head c/w gromet can be pulled through the cover, possibly made easier with some with some lubricant.

It's a square nut(loose) in a little clip that slides in the housing for "easier" fitting.
You could try to grab the nut with a set of long nose pliers.
I like the idea of pulling the cover over the gromit option though.
    Cheers, Kyle

Yes had the same problem I got a large flat screwdriver behind the head of the bolt and somebody to put a lot presure by pulling screwdriver over the top of cover ,then turned the bolt untill it came through the stainless steel part of the fuel cooler . Then go and get a long panel nut to fit the bolt then slide that over the hole you will not have a problem again

    engine cover removal

The right hand side captive screw does let go.

It fits through a gromite that you should be able to push in and then release the cover then you can fit a lock nut to the inner part and be careful of not tightening too much in future.

Once you get it off, leave it off. It serves no real purpose.

    thats not true.

it catches any oil that gets spilt by the engine and keeps it handy for ignition purposes.

dont forget, when you frisbee it take the bit off the back of the engine too.

As noted, a little bit of force will get the cover off over the head of the bolt with no damage.

How does it catch oil when it's above the engine? What bit off the back?

Thanks. Going to try and pop the bolt head through the rubber grommet later today.
