Disco D2 TD5 Diesel Fuel economy

Hey Trevor,

Nice to see that you were interested in my plight. Since I posted my tank capacity issue I have only traveled 395 kms. (23 kms round trip to to work and few other short runs).

I have come to the conclusion that my fuel gauge is faulty.
There is another thread under Discovery 2 Fuel Gauge and there is are several members that have expressed similar issues.

So I have been under the vechlle and it looks to me as if it is an original tank.. It has a few numbers stamped in it but none that give an idea of its capacity. So I can only take it that is 95ltrs.

I have filled a 20 ltr Jerry with Diesel and figure that in the next 6 to 8 days I will be spluttering down the road.

I also got BP fuel and put 200:1 two stroke and haven't used the air-conditioner.

As soon as I have a definate milage/tank size I will post it.,

Just a quick update.

Friday arvo I couldn't wait any longer and didnt want to risk doing damage by running out of fuel so I filled up.

I got 68 ltrs in for exactly 500klms so my calculations say 13.31 ltrs per 100.

Not great fuel economy.

So I haven't really confirmed my tank size.

The low light was on and the gauge was on empty.

So I can only guess that I have a 95 ltr tank like the book says and a defective fuel gauge.

So i will continue to carry a 20ltr jerry just in case.

My calculations say I should get 700kms to the 95ltrs with the current consumption.

Has anyone had their oil tested for fuel contamination?.

Yes, quite a few,,,
there is a test you can do at home ---

basically its like an inkblot test,,
drop a drop of oil onto a white surface and wait for it to separate,,,

where is that test blknight??

That economy sounds about right on a city cycle. Mine tends to "average" 12.5L per 100KM.

Big heavy car.....Little (hard working) diesel engine.

Plenty of threads on here about fuel enconomy for you to compare with.

I always thought these did 9-10 ltrs to the hundred as a rule.


The vehicle I have was chipped prior to my purchase so it has a 30% increase in consumption as far as I thought.

But I see just like yourself that the actual normal consumption is more like 12-13 ltrs to the hundred even without the chipping.

So mine is right on target.

My D2 is pretty much standard, apart from a Davis Landy chipped ECU, and over the last 16,000km I've averaged 10.9L/100km. Best was 9.5L/100km and worst was 13.6L/100km.

Land Rover's official consumption figures for the TD5 were:

Auto - urban 12.7l/100km, extra-urban 9.0l/100km, combined 10.3l/100km
Manual - urban 11.5l/100km, extra-urban 8.2l/100km, combined 9.4l/100km

It really depends on how and where you drive the D2, but you shouldn't automatically assume the consumption will go up 30% due to chipping.

If you are seeing consumption at the high end of the range, it could be an indicator of a cactus MAF.

Yes I agree 100 percent. When my maf was on its way out my fuel consumption was hit and miss.

If I consider changing my MAF do I need to:

re-set/calibrate/inform/upgrade/change/upload information/ nancom/etc etc etc the......... ECU?:angel:

Or is it a matter of just changing the old for new.?
