If you do swap make sure the replacement is either a Siemens OEM or LR Genuine Part. TD5alive in the UK have the Siemens at a fairly reasonable price.

The Genuine Siemens items are now being distributed by VDO as Continental have taken over Siemens (and Continental own VDO Electronics).

Most VDO items are readily available in Aust and should be able to find for under $200.00.

Avoid (if you can afford to) the cheapies on the UK market and Ebay. They are inacurate in some cases and don't last long.

You could also just try giving you old MAF a good clean with MAF cleaner or a good quality contact cleaner. They do get pretty grotty.

It's advertised as Siemens, and that is what was delivered when I ordered one mid-last year. Continental bought out VDO Siemens in 2008, so either these are a few years old or they are still produced under the Siemens badge. They work out at £92.50/$145AU shipped to Aus. and this was the cheapest source for the Siemens branded product when I looked.

Came across this archived review of the D2 TD5:

The result is a highway fuel consumption figure of 10.3 l/100 km. The average consumption figure on test was 11.6 l/100 km which included a large slice of off-road and sand driving.

Might provide a useful reference point for real world driving.

I have just put 83 litres in my Td5 auto for 575km of short haul town driving (5km at a time, nasty on a turbo diesel I know). Comes to about 14.4l/100.

And do you know what? Compared to my 1993 V8 classic Rangie....well let's just say I'm not complaining about the Disco!

I would be getting the air flow meter (MAF) checked if I were you. Oh and maybe try a different diesel supplier if you go to the same one all the time.

Getting MAF checked ASAP.

I think my fuel pump is about to die.. Noisey whirring sounds. I can even hear it when doors are shut.

Maybe ????? part of the high fuel usage!!!!!

Current real world economy

Stock Td5 on 18" road pattern Tyres.
Genuine nudge bar, driving lights.
Loaded for two people for 10 days.
All driving done at the posted speed limits.

Melbourne - Adelaide - 10.54 L/100 km
Adelaide - Port Augusta. - 9.45 L/100 km (easy day just cruising)
Port Augusta - Coober Pedy (& drive around there for the day) 10.37 L/100 km
Coober Pedy - Erldunda. 11.07 L/100 km (headwind & speed up once in NT)
Haven't fueled up since Erldunda, spent a few days driving around Uluru etc.

Let you know on the return trip, downhill all the way isn't it?
