Still not sure I would call it a spike, but the brightening effect may well ahve come from the alternator if it was on the way out - the regulator starting to give up the ghost, which could have resulted in voltages up to 15, 16 volts, or even a little higher. A dodgy rectifier in the alternator would also explain the battery not charging properly, but current still flowing to the starter motor okay.

Could be higher voltages were upsetting one of the SRS sensors?

    Would also damage coil packs.

And no need for a diode effect with oxidation at the terminals, which while possible (I guess) would be a bit unusual.

I assume no SRS light since you've replaced the alternator?

More surge than spike most times I agree Pinelli

The srs light never came back on after the battery terminal clean

The coil pack and alternator replacement happened at least 1 month later, well after srs light had gone

And no srs light since any of the above

Could it possibly be a combination of partly failed rectifier in alternator feeding AC current through the corroded battery terminal? Or partly failed rectifier causing voltage regulator failure when not clamped to battery?

GAWD - just keep those terminals clean!

    Cheers

Quite probably. A clean connection between the alternator and battery would mean high current flow between the two, reducing the voltage due to internal resistance in the alternator, even with a busted regulator. Dirty terminals would mean battery not charging, and lower currents out of the alternator. Lower currents means less voltage lost in the alternator, and so higher voltages, giving you the brightening lights.

Cleaning the terminals hid the symptoms of the failing alternator. Ain't autoelectrics fun?
