Would you buy another?

I had three D2's,the first two did have a few problems,but the last one,MY04 was one of the best vehicles i ever owned.

One of my son's has it now,and every time i see it i wonder why i ever sold it.

As for the D4,it is so much smoother,quieter,& more powerful than the D2,there is just no comparison,but you will pay for it.

A good 2nd hand D2a is a lot of car for the money.

Yes, I had a RR classic in the Uk 15 years ago, loved driving it but it was unreliable. Told myself I wouldn't get another lr unless I cold afford a new one. Came over here 11 months ago and ended up buying a D2a as I couldn't afford a new one! It was unreliable to start with due to previous owners running water in coolant but I managed to solve all of those issues and I love the thing, they have something intangible when compared to other 4x4's. Everything else just feels soulless after a landy......:D

I love my Defender, but I replaced my wife's RRC with a TD5 D2 Update HSE, as I needed a diesel 7 seater; and I've got a few mates with S and ES D2s that have been raised, and sorted to suit their needs.

I was reluctant to get a D2, but now that I have one, I'd buy another and I'd be happy to use it as a long distance tourer to replace the 110, if I wasn't so much in love with the 110.

On the last trip we went out the D2 TD5 with a Tru Track got up steep wet clay where two Defenders with front / rear lockers needed winching, which was quite impressive, though I think it had more to do with weight / tyres / steepness. As the steepness exponentially increases the weight handicap. I'm surprised how little suspension travel the D2 has in comparison to a D1 or Defender, but they seem to go just as well.

My recommendation would be to get an update (03-04 model). Expect issues, but know that all the issues are well documented on on line and the fixes are all cheap. There are no catastrophic drivetrain issues, mainly electrickery stuff, so factor in a nanocom or hawkeye with your purchase.

Then again, the Patrol might be worth more when it comes time to get a D3/4, but I think I'd prefer to drive a D2 over a Patrol, and if you're crunching the numbers for dollars, factor in how much you might expect to pay in fuel & servicing in the meantime.

Yep would buy a D2 again no worries. Sure they have some issue's, but mine took me everywhere I wanted to go including the Canning Stock Route and other than the turbo hose collapsing when the car was new and a belt tensioner bearing seizing the car was great.

If I was to do another trip like the canning I would buy a D2 and fit it out instead of taking the D3.

As an alround 4x4 I think the D2 off the shelf is hard to beat.

I liken selling my landy to getting rid of the dog.

When it came down to it, I just couldn't do it. Sure its square looking, makes funny noises, but there's something about it that I love.

For me its perfect, comfortable around town and can get you to some good spots off road.

Sure Id get another one....if I could ever bring myself to selling mine, haha.

You have to go with the heart and not the head if you like Land Rovers.

Im from Birmingham once upon a time and mate in the track admitted to get the cars done and out in the early 90's the Defender and D1's were 'thrown' together. I wont be sharing stories!

However, the kick up the arse was about 1995. D2's we're built more like Rover cars which was with much more care.

I have a 2001 D2 and a 2007 Nissan X-trail and have done for 3 years.

D2 has had the following issues

Throttle Body bypass due to a coolant leak
Sagging Headliner - age related really!
Air spring leak
Clock Bulb
Valley Gasket Replaced

Nissan

New Air Con Pump $1400!
2 x Window Switches
Heater Fan Switch
12v Supply , kept
OD Switch on Gear stick

Dont forget the LR is 5 years older and will be higher maintenance

Yep. Had my first one 7 yrs ago, sold it on thinking I didnt want it near me when it was time to change engine etc (I sold it good and strong at 240xxxkm) but after 4 years without, I'm going back (to a 2001 anyway)

Yep. Thanks to clubagreenie going over the darn thing with a fine tooth comb, they are fixing a couple of issues and I'll hopefully be picking it up next weekend.
In retrospect, I don't think I would be recommending the dealership to others, I've just been incredibly lucky with the assistance I had and have lucked on to what I hope/think is a good car worth the added bs involved in interstate purchasing
