Equivalent to 460NM which, according to one of the engineers here at work, means that you need to apply 23kg to the end of 2 metres of "bar"

Yes it's not as much effort as the tension number sounds. Not too bad to get off. Need two people..one to hold a breaker bar handle and socket against the chassis rail.use welding gloves ...the other to hit the starter (remove fuel pump relay first ) on off..on off..and they come undone pretty easy that way.

Your biggest problem isn't going to be doing up the new bolt to the correct torque but undoing the old one.

If your Landy is a manual it may be possible to stick it in gear and chock the wheels to hold the crank still whilst endeavouring to undo the nut whilst hanging off the end of a huge bar. Degree of difficulty 3.4, chance of injury 4.5.

Otherwise or for an auto a 3/4 drive socket on an extension bar jagged onto the PASSENGER side chassis rail and flicking the starter switch might do the trick, taking care not to drive/unscrew the socket/extension head into the radiator. Degree of difficulty 1.2, stress level 4.8.

Or plan c, welding a plate onto the remains of the broken casting so that the remains of the pully can be held whilst swinging on a bar as in the first option. Degree of difficulty 4.9, chance of success without damage /injury also 4.9.

If you get as far as doing up the new bolt one of these will help, and a good price to boot.

one of these will be pretty handy too

There's a good write up on what's involved here.

    Hello,
No nothing on the package plain white box, not even a stamp or anything saying it was from here, sorry for the late reply as out here things are a little slow on the minesite. I didn't use it as was told it is electrical possible engine harness needs replacing.

That's a pity. Turner say they can no longer get the Australian made damper and are looking at alternative - which will be substantially more expensive.

There is a mob in Wagga Wagga that do rebuilds of dampers which might be an alternative if the metal bits of the damper are in ok shape.

A td5 might almost pass for a truck.

    Harmonic Balance replacement warning

    Hi Guys,
Following my experience with this job over the last week or so thought I'd post a warning. My Td5 D2 threw a HB near Tamworth last saturday 2003 model, 137000Km. Got towed into Tamworth and the NRMA dropped the vehicle at the local LR dealers. Got in there Mon morning (when I should have been back home at work!) to be told that Land Rover no longer supply Harmonic Balances but they can get an after market one in about 4 days. I got on the phone and had parts (Harmonic Balance , fan and belt) there next morning several hundred dollars cheaper than those that they had quoted. Well & good. 2:30pm that afternoon I get a call from them to inform me that they have broken the new balance whilost installing it using the technique recommended by Land Rover (Special tool to hold Balance which has two pins that fit into the bolt holes in the casting, snapped off the lug from the casting. I had to purchase another HB and am now attempting to have the parts supplier refund hopefully the purchase cost. After consultation wiht the supplier the mechanic locked the flywheel when tightening the second HB. All in all an expensive little exercise between parts and dealer labour rates.
Only question now is was the aftermarket HB a one off dud or are they all like that from that supplier. Hopefully the former in which case in the long run I was probably lucky that it broke during installation.
I thought the motor sounded like the pinging/ preignition in my old HQ holden when I was a young fellow, hear anything like this I would advise a serious look at the HB very quickly.
