Hi Phil. Yep metallic noises from the engine bay are often a sign of HB on the way out, as well as a squeak on shut down. Not sure about aftermarket HBs, as I said I'd really only trust genuine for such a critical engine component unless it was OEM standard. I'd say you've either got a dud or the LR dealer cocked up the install something chronic and as such, you're lucky it happened on install and they should cough up. We used to live in Tamworth with our first D2, the service at the LR stealer used to be fantastic, the mechanic really knew his stuff. Then he left

I had to purchase another HB and am now attempting to have the parts supplier refund hopefully the purchase cost. .
Makes you wonder if it was 'broken' because you didnt get the parts from them?

Anyway, am getting in to looking at all this kinda stuff on our D2a, whilst he only has 145,000km on him, age is catching up on a few things

Replacing the belt tensioner and fan hub bearings would be good preventative repair for the HB. Also check damper flywheel to crank pulley bolts torque.
    Replacing my tensioner this week.

    Talking TD5 HARMONIC

All the best!!!!!! I went through all this last year--made all the locking tools myself bought a 500mm 1/2" extension joined it up with a300mm covered it with a steam pipe and bent the 'b-----' out it tightening it all up....bought my new aftermarket HB from England replaced tensioner water pump and PS pump[main culprit] and belt car was off the road for over a month and I thought seriously of a replacement 4WD-----just couldn't find a better one--- What I have since found out is : get to know your LR mechanic their info and experience can save you a lot of skinned knuckles and$$$$: It took a few years and a lot of that green stuff before I found mine

Mine just spat it yesterday. Main balancer body and pulley is intact but it broke off where the front ring bolts up.
Was lucky enough to be able to extract the ring from behind the fan after snapping off a few loose fan bits and limp back home being it was only 3km's away.

Linnrover had a spare one that was used on Sarahs car to diagnose a vibration fault and had only done a couple of thousand k's however I lucked out on the fan which sold the day before. Currently hunting for a good price on one.

First failure the Discos given me in the 4 years I've had it, anything else has been preventative maintenance.

I have a fan in Karratha I just took it off of my car chasing a vibration as it had a little bit of play in the bearing.
The fan works perfectly I don't think there is anything wrong with it as it didn't fix the issue I had its done 201000 Ks
Depends how much you need it I guess

Just wondering , could there be a link between HB failure, & oil leaks in the front of the engine, over time, considering the amount of rubber in its construction? It would be interesting to see if those who have had the HB go, have a history of oil leaks in that area. Just a thought, Bob
