Thats a tidy looking setup and have book marked it, if I need it in future. As for now I got my guard vents this morning from Powerful UK, and your post came in time to urge me to add to this thread.
So I decided to try another vent as the Supercharged writing made me cringe, so I bought these ones instead for 59LB cant remember aussie dollar. http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af202/HunterQLD/008.jpg They came in gunmetal grey and rather than my original thought of black, I thought they may look nice as the same colour of the silver rims I have. The flexi hose I have hundreds of mtrs of it, but it is too small in diameter, so will need to buy some more.
I made a template simply from drawing the inside dimensions of the vent, from the box that it came packaged in, and added another 7.5mm extra for the slope upwards. No need to add extra to the end as per arrow, because you need to guess this part. http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af202/HunterQLD/003-1.jpg hope drawings help.
I then needed to mill, or grind, or dremel off the inside lugs so the vent sits flat against the guard. http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af202/HunterQLD/005.jpg one is different to the other, but makes no difference as they can only go on one way.
Now I am waiting for a sunny day here so I can cut the guards out and fit these vents.
I'll put up a pic here for anyone that maybe interested when the job is done, and I will post an update on the condition of the air filter and see if it may even run smoother after a 5k workout. All in all it has to be better than the stock way they had it.
I installed the intake this morning. It's very straight forward as all mounting holes are already present. The main part of the job is removing the guard and refitting. I also had to pull out the 2nd battery and horn so I could get the nut on the rear mounting point but that was only a minor hassle.
Not sure if I would have bothered if I'd had to pay list price, but at $170 shipped it looked like a good option.
What I like is that it fits without any mods to the body at all. If I decide to go to a Mantec at some point I can remove the Gulf Intake as part of the install process.
Does the end take in air from near the door crevice?
It looks like you could blank the end off and then fit a guard vent into the side.
That definately is a better option than standard.
I was hoping to fit my vents today, but I didn't like them as silver, so put 3 coats of black 2pac on them. Plus it's still raining and havent figured out how to take the blinker lights out yet. I bought a disco repair cd this week, but forgot that none of our computers have cd/dvd drives anymore.
It does make for a neat install, although I suspect the dust intake will be the same, given the amount of dust that forms around the door after an unsealed road drive.
I wonder why they lowered the water crossing intake level? Is there a reason why it had to dip down and not go straight back? It does take the pain out of cutting though
There is a cutout in the passenger door frame between the top and middle guard bolts. You can remove the blanking plate when the guard is off. The rubber gasket you can see in the pics seals up against the door frame so the intake draws air in from the door gap.
The intake opening is between immediately below the top door hinge - if it was straight there would be nowhere for the top hinge to attach
I'm doing a two week trip traveling mildura, broken hill, tibooburra, camerons corner, flinders ranges and back to melbourne in mid-august so I'll report back on how the intake fares with the dust.
Wading is not a problem - the navigator freaks out if the water makes it to the bottom of the doors
AHA! Fair enough reason for the design I suppose. HeHe smart navigator I would not really like to be in water that was up to the original intake level either but then there is often that, OOPS! Didnt find THAT hole when I waded across! . And all those carpets to dry out afterwards.
That little jaunt should give it a fair test, with varying terrain to test it. In the pic, below the windscreen trim, is that a rats nest?
Cheers Scott
That stuff could be junk that has washed through the drain holes below the windscreen plenum - you know void immediately underneath the trailing edge of the bonnet when raised, poor explanation sorry, where the heated windscreen plugs are?
Maybe? Dunno.
I have had an antechinus 'investigating' some of the heated screen wiring and also some of the foam that's on the firewall (engine bay side) while my Disco has been parked up at work on Fraser. No damage other than cosmetic.
One of those waxy blue rat baits lives in that space now - strung up on a bit of wire so it doesn't bounce out. And no, it seemingly hasn't been affected by the engine bay heat. Maybe it is working too...there's teeth marks on it!
