Seeing that setup...Has there been a setup that links the vent to the inside of the cab? Or am I missing something in my thought? By that I mean, a particular brand of offroader factory built, or even a custom job. I Am only guessing pollution inside, or even noise should'nt affect passengers?

It seems that it would eliminate the majority of dust problems, and you'd really know if youve hit the water level.

I dont think an inside air intake would be very nice noise wise. The intake rattle would be quite loud!. I remember years ago we did Mud Racing or Trailing in modified cars and the course involved water pits! We used to have the air intakes into the cab to reduce water intake as we hit the holes of water and I can tell you the intake noise was LOUD! Even with full face helmets on!.
So that is not a road going option I think.

    Thanks for that information Scott!

It proves that it is always best to ask questions from others experiences. (Even if they sometimes sound dumb).

It just stopped me from maybe trying something regretful

Well the vents are in. The hardest part about fitting them was cutting the small opening for the blinker lights. I found that a jigsaw worked the best at cutting all metal.

Would have liked to get install pics, but it started raining half way through.

I know that these vents will be better than the standard intake setup of the car. And I personally like the aesthetics of it also. To me it has a bit more toughness now IMO, and i am happy I painted them black instead of the original silver I tried first...

    Modified air intake

Hi guys, I'm coming into this discussion a bit late but I have had this issue in the past too and made my own solution.

When I first bought my D2a (new) I had continual problems with the air filter being inundated with dust on dusty roads. The air intake sources air from the gap between the inner and outer guard and it was sucking air from the bottom rear of the guard, directly behind the front wheel.

I have installed a pipe from the hole on the inner guard to source air from behind the headlight area. This air is much cleaner than from behind the wheel, and I had not have any issues since. The duct was made from 90mm PVC stormwater pipe, heated to bend it into shape as required. It might look a bit ugly, but its hidden from general view and it works.

    Cheers,

    Thats a good idea Chris!

I initially thought of doing a similar thing, but connecting it to the top of a guard vent. The only problems with that idea was whether rain would get in, and how to minimise water seepage (spelling?). The other thing was whether 1 top guard flute would look ridiculous or even 2.

How's the air filter now? Do you get a cleaner filter when its time for a change?

One thing I noticed today with the guard flutes is, that overtaking at 100ks on the highway, I started get an odd sound? It sounded like both side wheel bearings had gone. After I slowed down to 95, the sound completely dissapeared? Im still not sure whether it is the wheel bearings, or it is the flutes? You'd think you would be able to hear if the bearings were stuffed or on their way out doing 95? If the sound is coming from the flutes, then man, they must be taking in some air. (Which im not sure if thats a good thing or bad thing now?). It seems to have more responsiveness also on overtaking from 90ks to 140ks, but I havent given it a kick in the guts like that since the new turbo was installed, so not sure either way.

The sound is like running a set of muds on the truck, and after 120ks, there is a very slight vibration (not smooth, but not rough). Guess a trip to M.R Autos will tell on next service if it dosnt play up worse in the meantime.

The noise you are hearing is probably air turbulence as air passes over the vents, akin to having a window partially down. They are quite large and hollow. Then again it could be the bearings! Cheers Scott

Yep, i'm guessing it's the wind now.

No noises what so ever doing 60 or 80ks today. So cannot see the noise as wheel bearings now. Has to be the wind in the vents.

Looks like the stereo will need to be cranked up on the highways. Yeah, I always drive with the window down, even when it's coming down cats and dogs.

I'll put up an FYI after a few filter changes, tested in all terrains.

So just to clarify, there's no point and no way this is done with a snorkel? But rather stopping dust ingress with the standard intake?
I got confused with Scott posting because I know he has a snorkel
