    Temp guage gone whacky!

My temp guage normally just goes to half way in good time, but today it was weird. it wouldnt really 'warm' up, would try and sat at 1/4 mark, then would go back down, then it would get to almost half way, and go back down, then would get to half way, and go back down. then finally it made it to half way and seemed to stay there. my coolant is not low. i do want to do a flush and replace all coolant though. I think i should replace thermostat too, or is there a thing with landies and faulty temp guages? or just likely to be a termostat problem? I know air int he system can do it too but i dont know why id have air in there when i check the levels very frequently and it never seems to need topping up.

my steering also seems to feel a bit weird. it oculd possibly just be me and my weird sensations in my hands/arms but it just seems odd LOL! there is some play in the bushes but not to be of worry. powersteering fluid is all ok. my tyres are worn and horrrible with chunks missing so i guess those could be the culprit?

and lastly! theres a loud squeal noise from the left hand side of the car, sounds like a belt slipping behind the dash, but i dont think there actually is one in that location! so im at a loss as to what the noise is. it does it mostly if ive been coasting along downhill then start to use the accelerator again. or sometimes if i take off hard. is it a normal landy quirk? LOL

i will be taking it to the pros when the golf sells, and making sure its all in tip top shape but anything i can do myself now ill get onto it!

    thanks in advance all

Re temp gauge - commonly a poor earth issue. In any event, if you are going to keep the disco, a proper temp gauge is almost as important as a low coolant alarm - both essential insurance in my humble opinion.
Other Qs - leave for the experts and gurus. Cheers

I had exactly the same temperature issues and a replacement thermostat fixed the problem. The noise you describe may be the exhaust manifold gasket leaking.

Thermostat explains the temp gauge, Get a proper one asap
I'd put money in the squeal being the exhaust manifold, symptoms fit it to a T.
Have a look around the manifold for signs of soot.
Get it skimmed and either get the webbing cut out or enlarge the studs, your choice, some say one, some say the other, but that arguments been and gone

My temp gauge had been playing up for a bit. Would warm up as per normal, then would drop to 1/4, some times a bit less, could pop the bonnet and wiggle the wire across the front of the head and make the temp gauge go back to normal.

Solution? Replaced the conduit over the harness. So far, no more dicky temp gauge.

i think mine is the thermostat, it stopped even warming up, so got new one yesterday and am about to go replace it i guess if it still does freaky things afterwards then ill check the conduit over the harness. least i wont have to replace the thermostatfor a while even if it is just a simple thing like that.
