Looking at a d2 Help needed!!

Hey guys I've given up the idea to buy a new 90def, but am considering purchasing a discovery 2. I've had a look around and was wondering if I could get some advise from some d2 owners. Ive looked at both v8 & td5 but all have autos. so i guess i need some opinions: V8 or td5? Are the autos any good for off roading? Anything else you guys could tell me about what to look for or stay away from would be much appreciated. Cheers in advance

What do you want it for?
Long distance touring? Weekend play toy? SWMBOs shopping trolley?
Do you want to stick with an auto or would you rather a manual?
The autos are great offroad, if you know how to use them in combination with the D2s driver aids. Some people don't like them and that's fine.
The V8 is certainly a bit more of a boys toy than the Td5 but a good chip/ECU flash soon sorts that out.
If you're on a budget, don't care about fuel economy and just want something the blast around in, get a V8.
If you can stretch the pockets a bit and want something that's a bit better on fuel, get a Td5.
I'd be waiting for one with ACE, it's worth waiting for. D2a (03MY onwards) is probably the pick, with the factory fitted CDL, etc.
Give each of them a good look over, check for anything that's obviously been freshly cleaned, check the fluids, take them for a drive, etc.
I'd pick an 04 Td5 auto with ACE and SLS, but that's just me
    Good luck

If you want a truck that is loads of good honest fun then its a manual V8. So much driver involvememt and a rocket ship. Off road auto beats the manual going up a steep hill and in first low the manual is the tits down a steep hill irrespective of HDC.Cheers.

Hey disco muppet thanks for the reply, it will be my daily driver and weekend offroader. Occational camping trips away as well. I'd love a manual but all the ones I've seen are auto. I've been looking at 2004 models. The ones I've checked out have only been someone's shopping trollys so are in pretty good nick.

Ive got the V8 manual. I love it but its thirsty. Its also got a bit much grunt in off-road situations without the driver aids. make sure you get a centre diff lock one. Look for coolant problems, the alloy heads are unforgiving and a blown head may lead to another one. They are very tough and go forever. Mines got 200K on it now and its lugged tools all over the place, towed excavators, 4WD everywhere. You wont regret with the right one. Enjoy

My neighbour is about to trade his MY04 D2a Td5 for a D4 - deal done, but one of the best looking gold ones around even though its been across the middle of Oz a few times and tows a lightish camper trailer, and another is selling a MY04 D2a Classic V8 7 seater with ACE ($12.5K?) and its said to be a one owner - but he's had a few problems of late.
I'm now a firm believer in the benefits of an auto, and a diesel man from way back.

The heads are bulletproof. ..its the gaskets that can blow if the motor is cooked from letting the cooling system go. If the engine is prepped and bolted back together properly for about 2k its all good.

    Cheers
