The heads are bulletproof. ..its the gaskets that can blow if the motor is
cooked from letting the cooling system go
By far the bigger problem is that it only can take one overheat on a 4 litre V8 to slip a sleeve requiring a complete rebuild.
Drive an EU3 TD5 ( 2002 0n) in good nick and you will like it. I had a highly modified 3.9 RRC optimised for torque and the TD5 tows much better and has plenty of poke around town , much to my surprise AND does at least 11.5 L per 100K .
I have found after 23 years of v8 ownership that you rarely use over 4000Rpm except when overtaking if you want reasonable fuel economy, and the TD5 is more powerful below say 3000RPM. The biggest thing I miss is the sound.

I have a 3.9 and a 4.0. The 4.0 is a far different beast to drive. I have overheated mine several times before the head gasket blew. All pots excellent on strip down as were liners. I know what that book says but in the end they are all different. Just buy a well maintained one.

Pray tell what is wrong with ones without Diff Lock? my 2002 D2 has never had a problem going where I have wanted it to go. I have sent it up and down rather steep hills and also through sand/mud without problem.

    Cheers

The non lockable CDL versions do VERY well offroad, but there are a variety of reasons why and circumstances in which CDL makes a big difference - for example when reversing back down steep hills CDL will avoid a slide which has been captured on a video (white D2) on the net in recent years. My brother knew the owner and driver of that vehicle and it wasnt pleasant. CDL adds traction and there is less wheel spin and greater ability to crawl along more slowly. CDL is also excellent in high speed dirt road driving.

I am speaking from having owned a D2 from new from 2002 without CDL and in a large variety of offroad situations and then retrofitting CDL.

    Cheers

Without a CDL adding diff locks is pointless, save cash and buy an 03/04 and your half way there, bigger inter cooler, CDL and last of the d2 model.

i would agree to rarely use over 4000, but it is there if you need it.
where with a td5, you dont have that backup, you have to change gears and lose some momentum.

You rarely use 4000 on a Td5, I've hit it twice pulling into traffic at 100kmh up a hill.
