Thread: Cleaning EGR.

Personally, and if you have a de'EGR kit on order, I wouldn't bother cleaning it. To do a proper job you would have to take the unit off to get both sides of the butterfly valve. Just cleaning one side is hardly worth it and any loose crud or over spray remaining will risk ending up in the either in the inter cooler or risks being blown into the engine. If your cleaning the MAP sensor, which is worth doing as it takes about 30 seconds, use an electrical contact cleaner which will leave no residue.

I just figured as I've got a while until my removal kit arrives, I'd at least give it a clean/eyeball to see how it goes. Bit of a clean can only be a good thing right?

Valvoline make a pressure pack called 'MASS AIR FLOW & THROTTLE BODY CLEANER'
It is specifically made for cleaning MAFs. About $10 per can.
I have used it just recently as my TD5 was cutting in and out under acceleration. It stopped the cutting in and out of the motor(You need to remove the MAF completely to do the job properly and follow the instructions on the can, spray the plugs and sockets aswell). A mechanic in Toowoomba put me onto it(I didn't think to even look at the MAF at the time)
Try it, you may not even need a new MAF.

I'm cleaning the MAP not the MAF. My MAF is fine, as is my MAP I'm assuming but as it's on the inlet manifold it might be a little gunky

If you need to do something before the EGR kit arrives your attention is probably best focused at the other end. I' suggest giveing the two Allen key bolts on the inlet side (on the exhaust manifold) a little spray of WD40 or similar and repeat every couple of days until you need to take them off. They can seize like bugger causing the heads to shear off when it comes to removing then to fit the blanking plate. Give your self a head start there.

IMHO you will not achieve much unless you take the butterfly off and clean it.
Mine had 140KK worth of hard black carbon crap on it and the best way to remove it was with a Gerni. I tried degreaser, but it only scratched the surface. Ther ewas so much crap that I recken the volume of the inlet was reduced at least 5%.
Similarly, you have to remove the MAP sensor and a good spray with Electronic contact cleaner seems to do the job. Do not stick anything in the hole.
My car had a stutter when reaccelerating after a downhill on the expressway and the cleaning of the butterfly eliminated it.
I am still undecided on whether to de EGR as I am waiting for when I have to remove the exhaust manifold as sure as eggs I will break an Allen bolt.

So I pulled the EGR off today, was expecting to see a butterfly valve but I understand thats an update or something?



So I cleaned it up...



Inlet is fairly gunky although nowhere near as bad as what I was expecting based on what some people have posted...



Now I can either chuck it back on or wait until my removal kit arrives
Hate removing those intercooler hoses. Yuck.
Also, I need more degreaser!
