252 xxx kms on mine, fluid replaced at 219k due to leaky cooler, PO towed a mid sized trailer, I rarely tow at all. Other than that not really a known service history. Shifts beautifully.
When it goes I'll bite the bullet and get an Ashcroft unit with the HDTC
The Phantom - Oslo Blue 2001 Td5 SE.
Half dead but will live again!

    Nina - Chawton White 2003 Td5 S

Had mine rebuilt at 200kK's as it seemed to be an issue. 20,000 later after dodgy mech refill it blew the one way clutch (which is pretty common).

Went to a Stage 2 Ashcroft with new large TC and haven't looked back.

314xxx on mine, it over heating towing a big horse float but just let it cool, and then changed the oil and filter when got home. still seems fine. i have no idea if it has had work done with previous owner though? i have a funny noise at certain revs now, but i do not think that is the auto trans. oculd be exhaust or turbo? will be fitting an oil cooler and changing the fluid again probably this weekend as there was heaps of gunk when i changed the filter LOL.

So I will go against the general flow of the thread and say mine died at 230k For some reason the pump decided to take its bat and ball and died The auto guy said the main workings, eg clutch packs etc were still oki just the pump , but of course that meant a total rebuild! But yes 2-240 ish seems rebuild time to look mostly.
And if needed shop around, there seems some silly quotes for rebuilds out there, remembering the auto is not Landrover specific, it is used in quite a few different vehicles. Ashcrofts is the deal if you can afford it though.

    Cheers Scott

What is the stage 2? I am familiar with the Heavy Duty TC, but I cannot see anything about a Stage 2 auto on the Ashcroft website...

EDIT: found, thanks to Google - about half way down the page on http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co...s/zf4hp22.html

I've had to pay GST and import duties when purchasing stuff from Ashcroft over the $1,000.00 limit.

    Thanks.
I have 275000 KMs on my 2003 Disco 2 TD5 and whilst no issues with the transmission at this stage, I am planning for it should it happen.
I recently qot a quote, £725 exchange plus a £240 upgrade for the heavy duty converter. There will also be a deposit payable of £750 which would be refunded if I return the old core unit to them. The transport quote was £205 door to Melbourne airport or £390 door to door with TNT.
Are you in a position to advise how much the import duties were?

Budget for up to 15% of the total cost including freight and you should get some change.

GST of 10% is applied last, so it is applied to the cost of the items, the cost of the freight and the cost of the import duties. So the Australian Government gets a nice little chunk from you.
