And using the right tools makes it oh soooo easy to do, no banging with hammers, no skinning knuckles.

Brougham and Dave - you speak like taking off the fan is something done more than once in a lifetime! Are you crazy? [/QUOTE]

Hah. Nah just have had to remove for water pump replacement. I do most of my own repairs (much cheaper!)

The fan only comes off when I've done the belt replacement, or coolant hoses, or the head gasket, or harmonic balancer, or idler pulley replacement...

Thanks to all contributors, and especially Disco WA, without whose help I would still be trying to get the fan off. I got the D2 started tonite after almost 3 weeks sitting idle. Head gasket fixed. Mounts done. Water pump done. Oil cooler done. Thermostat done. Just in time for Easter! Who'd of thunk it.

before purchase of TD5 i would usually prefer to pay a mechanic to do serious jobs - like oil changes etc.
my toolbox will develop proportional to the repairs I can't afford to pay a mechanic to fix.

Nah, despite my nievity I am looking forward to a long road trip with a motor I know I've tightened the bolts on. (Gulp).

Good for you. You have started on the journey of Discovery. Don't be put off by all the horror stories. Educate yourself about the vehicle, I suggest in a couple of ways. A MUST, is buy the RAVE dvd from Dave, at the shop.
After you have bought it, don't wait for a breakdown, study it. Learn just how the coolant system works , for example, especially learn about the engine management system, you will see it is not black magic. My viscous fan spanner is an old spanner ground down to fit. I bought a you bewt one, but not as good as the home made one.

Just a tip. When I do my 5,000 km service, I take the belt off, fan off, remove idler bearings, & regrease. Also check all other bearings. Let me tell you, on the track is not the place to do a 101 on the belt removal & replacement. If you haven't done it before, not that easy, to do it right. The Discovery is a hands on vehicle, get hands on, you will love it. Luckily we have this forum, it's information is priceless. Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

Bahco make a thin mouth adjustable spanner that fits. That's how I changed mine.. You do need to use a lever to apply pressure but at least its useable for other projects. Hope it worked out for you

Aaah. Now it's all back together I've found the likely source of the blown gasket. Fuel cooler leak. Thank god for this site - quoted near enuff to $1000 for new cooler.......or $28 for some o rings and new clips....Mmmmm. Decisions....
