    Anyone near Bayswater WA got a viscous fan spanner thingy I can buy borrow or steal f

    Who'd have thought eh. Finally convince the boss and kids they want to go to Esperance the long way, via Kalgooorlie and Lake Ballard, at Easter. Do the right thing and take D2 TD5 to a proper mechanic who diagnoses carbon monoxide in the expansion tank - ie blown head gasket. Quote to fix (including new everything admittedly) beyond my means. When the nausea cleared, I dried my eyes and figured I would do it myself - yep before Easter.
    The posts on here built my bravado, but I probably should have taken into account my mechanical (in)ability - quite early into the project I've hit a snag. Tried everyone from rovacraft to Bunnings and no one can sell me a 36mm viscous fan spanner (or the other bit).
    Does anyone nearby have some way of getting the fan out, or can lend me the stuff I need? Happy to provide some restitution or beer and you can even watch and laugh for a bit, if you like. (If you've done this HG job before - happy for advice too).

    I gotta do the same job, but I'm not sure I'll get it done by easter. Good news is I got a viscous fan size spanner in a cheap bike tool kit from aldi.
    Don't think you have aldi in WA do you?

    I've always used my quality Kinchrome 12" shifter. Take out one of the 10mm fan pulley bolts (have it at about 2 o'clock) and jam a laaarge flat blade screw driver between the other visible bolt and the hub, then heave strain and if necessary bash with a hammer on the shifter.
    This has always worked on mine.

    Thank you all respondents t- your help and advice is gratefully received.
    before purchase of TD5 i would usually prefer to pay a mechanic to do serious jobs - like oil changes etc.
    my toolbox will develop proportional to the repairs I can't afford to pay a mechanic to fix.
    Brougham and Dave - you speak like taking off the fan is something done more than once in a lifetime! Are you crazy?
    Nah, despite my nievity I am looking forward to a long road trip with a motor I know I've tightened the bolts on. (Gulp).

    Don't know about the TD5, but the 300TDI fan spanner size is 32mm
    I just use a long open end ring spanner and have no problems
    Just remember that it is LH thread

    for those who don't know their lefts from their rights on a TD5 when standing in front of the car and with a spanner on the fan nut ... it needs to be undone in an 'anti-clockwise' direction to undo, ie. it's just a normal nut and bolt type situation
