Tyre shop advice, true or not

Good evening all, I currently have 255/55/18's on my D2a. I just spent 4 days up on Fraser camping and fishing with a couple of mates and our sons including the Anzac Day service at Waddy point which was fantastic. Got a great pic of my son wearing my wife's medals and me wearing mine next to each other. Anyway back to the original subject..... Wasn't hard to notice that my highway tyres which are coming to the end of their life need changing (along wih replacing my suspension) So the plan is to replace the rims with 16's and to get some AT's to start. I spoke to a tyre shop this arvo and he pointed me towards some Yokohama Geolanders (GO12) in 235/70/16. I looked at some Maxxis 245/70/16's as well which I liked the look of but he informed me that my insurance would be null and void as they were outside the placarded limits. Is this so as I much preferred the Maxxis tyres as they seemed to be a copy of the BFG AT pattern and looked a lot more aggressive than the Geo's. Just moved back to Brisvegas from Perth over the new year so not sure of the rules. Other option is to ring my insurance company. I have looked through the good oil on tyres however a lot of the links won't come up for me so maybe the info is there but I can't get to it.

He's full of ****. 245-70 is only a few mm bigger than stock. You are allowed to go up to 20mm bigger in every state.

That's only about a half inch increase in diameter from stoke, so a quarter inch lift, which is well and truly road legal. I don't think the manufacturer specifies a maximum possible size, only a recommended sizes? Did you look at what the placard actually says, that would be a good starting point.

If Yokohama 4wd tyres are anything like their road tyres, my experiences are that they wear quickly. Maybe look to other tyre shops for options.

Slunnie we ran yokohama ATs on our subies for years, and they always performed and wore well.
    Maybe it's different on a D2.
And yes, your tyre man is full of ****.

Nsw was 15mm over placard allowed, so 245/70/16 still ok.
Insurance will not tell you, it is up to you usually to have the car in a roadworthy condition.

Hey Muppet, that's based on ownership of 4 (5?) new Subies all that came with them - from the first H6-3.0 Outback until the current. Actually, in addition, the Impreza had it's Yokos replaced at 40k also, my the Frontera V6s Yokohamas projected to about 40k before that went also. The D2 has never had Yokohama tyres on it. The Pirelli ATR tyres have been on it now for 6 years and are still going well.
    Cheers

    Hmm. Odd.
Mum was no Miss Daisy behind the wheel, lots of gravel + high speed bitumen.
    Something in the air maybe?
    My ATRs are also fautless

Thanks for the feedback fellas, the placard in the disco's say the 235/70/16's are the ones to use however for the 18's it's 255/55/18 which is what I have on already. I already knew this but...

Just trying to find out the insurance side of it so will go to the horses mouth for a little info.

LT 245 75 16 is within the above requirements on a D2 and a very good size for on and offroad use.
