Does it have a service history at all?
Would you buy a 2003 TD5 auto with 300,000 + klms to be used as a daily driver and as a tow tug for a camper? If so what would you do first and what would be your list of items to look at before purchase and what you would do to it first once purchased.
Ive trawled through the posts and read alot but not to many posts are for D2a's with this sort of klms on them.
Thanks.
Does it have a service history at all?
Dont know yet, but lets assume it does.
It would have to be dependent on a couple of things...
A - Service History - with proof...
B - Initial purchase price - Regardless of service history at those KMs you need to allow for plenty of work to be done..
C - Any modifications and how the vehicle was used previously.. ie.. If it has lots of scrapes and dings underneath it has most likely had a hard life... although that isnt necessarily the case... it is an indication.
Not having owned a TD5 (my current Disco is a V8 and had a D1 300TDi) I would only assume the normal items you see in here... ie Cooling, 3 Amigos, Oil in the loom, Front prop shaft etc... there is plenty of info to help you spend money or offer up sacrifice to the blood gods (skinned knuckles etc) in here...

There are so many on gumtree and carsales I wouldnt get it unless it was an absolute screaming bargain! There are still a few one or 2 owner machines coming up sale with very little or no off road work.
There is a 2003 TD5 auto on gumtree in Melbourne with 368K on the clock, i think its under 10k but i'd still have 2nd thoughts about buying it.
MY08 TDV6 SE D3- permagrin ooh yeah
2004 Jayco Freedom tin tent
1998 Triumph Daytona T595
1974 VW Kombi bus
1958 Holden FC special sedan
Would I buy it? Yes I would if it suited me. I can't afford to buy a later one so I'd buy this prepared to spend a little (or a lot, but that can happen on a low mileage) as you can/need to.
I bought a 2000 TD5 for $1500 in my mind, Gas worth $4,500, bull bar $1000, tow bar $1000, cargo barrier $200ish.
Take those figures from the purchase price of $8,000 and I have only $1500 left to pay for the vehicle, at least I can argue it to myself that way.
There was about 360,000 on the clock, yes I have three friends travel most places with me, yes there is some oil in the injector loom, there has only been one bigish expense, just replaced the auto trans. Whilst on that subject, when overhauling an auto they should reco the Torque Convertor, this was estimated to me as around $1,600, I got an improved TC from TCT in Melbourne for around a thousand, seems silly to go standard when this is an option.
Any'ow, that's my two bobs worth, you can't buy a better 4WD for less.

For the right price and if you were prepared to proactively change out some of the known problem areas then you could have a good car. Make sure you find out exactly what has already been repaired as you do start to see "end of life" type failures from 200-250k. And find out if the auto has also been serviced with regular tranny fluid changes.
Sorry to change the subject a little but is there an "end of life" list anywhere?
However.... I bought a 2001 Disco 2 with 243,000 km. The Auto had been overhauled (receipts and warranty) and had a service record showing an around Australia trip. Had it checked by a Land Rover Specialist that found a few issues which I got fixed and now driving it..
Get it checked and fix what's needed and enjoy. Mine's done two quick trips to Coffs from Adelaide and enjoy the trips. Never let me down on ether trip..
