So if they are "normal" what is the relationship of the tyre to the leading arm on full lock?
I was able to get many extra degrees from shortening the stops until the tyres were close but not touching the leading arms.
You also have to be aware that the steering box is centralised so that the lock stops the tyre before the box runs out of travel. There is a slot for a bolt at the back of the drop arm that if inserted give sthe straight ahead position of the steering box. I didn't have to adjust mine as although it was out a bit, this means your steering wheel goes out of position. If you have different amounts of turn on both sides this should be looked at but by itself will not cause poor turning circle.
I am sure that a D2 with only 235 tyres has a better turning circle than an RRC.
BTW my lock stops were so tight with locktite ethat I sheared the RH one trying to loosen it, but any bolt will do.

Thanks for the info, Philip. I didn't pay much attention to the tyre's relationship to the leading arm. I was focused purely on why it has such hideous lock, or lack of!

The lock stops were wound right in, so even shortening them or replacing them with bespoke bolts won't help. Mine came out quite easily, and I greased them before I placed them back in. My steering wheel appears canted slightly to the right, when the wheels are centred, but not by much.

The D2 steering setup can be strange. I have seen a D2 that has a terrible turning circle. I noted that when the steering is turned all the way the spindles were not hitting the steering stops. So something else must have been stopping it.

I'm assuming that your on standard 16" wheels (not aftermarket offset wheels).

Turn the steering all the way to one side and have a look at where the tyre is in relation to the trailing arms. From my experience with no steering stops fitted you should be able to hit the trailing arm with the tyre.

Huh? there are two different lengths of lock stop bolts. There are earlier posts on this.
The 18 inch wheel locks stops are longer for some reason (which is not to stop the tyres hitting the leading arm s they clear easily.

If you shorten the lock stop bolt , then the angle of lock will be increased. I just cut AFAIR 4MM from the bolt that I didn't break, and used washers to space the other bolt.

If you cut the bolt off by the difference in the earleir posts , then the lock will increase, assuming you have the longer bolts. believe me, I have done it.

Phil, what I was saying is I took both lock stops out at the same time, and turned the wheels both ways. With the stops out, you'd think I'd get more lock, but it was exactly the same...2 turns left and 1.5 right. That's what made me think there was another issue.

It's running standard 16" LR wheels, not after market ones.

OK I am afraid that I really cannot understnd your issue from what you post.
Some questions
1 When you turn onto full lock with the lock stop bolts fitted , does the lock stop touch the axle housing "home". How long are your lock stop bolts?

2 When you remove the lock stop what is the distance between the lock stop bolt position and its"home"? when you turn the steering to full lock.

3 when you have the wheels straight ahead can you screw the appropriate sized bolt into the steering box through the slot at the rear of the drop arm?

4 how far away from the suspension leading arm is the tyre on each side when you have the steering on full lock .You are looking at the rear of the tyre vs the leading arm.
5 Have you tried removing the steering damper and testing the above? I just had a thought that the wrong (short) steering damper could be fitted or it could have a bent shaft.

When turned to full left lock, 2mm from lock stop to 'home'. When turned to full right lock, around 10mm from lock stop to 'home'.
Lock stop bolts are 20mm.

See above, plus the 20mm for each lock stop bolt.

Yes. But the steering wheel is a few degrees off centre, to the right.

4 how far away from the suspension leading arm is the tyre on each side when you have the steering on full lock .You are looking at the rear of the tyre vs the leading arm.

On full right lock, the rear of the tyre is 55mm from the radius arm. On full left lock, only 25mm from the radius arm.


5 Have you tried removing the steering damper and testing the above? I just had a thought that the wrong (short) steering damper could be fitted or it could have a bent shaft.
Haven't tried that yet.
