    D2 battery warning light

Well here I was driving out to view an Uluru sunrise when I notice the battery warning light on.
I went for a 20ish min drive to see if it would go out but it still remains.
Car has a red arc dual battery system and has been running a waeco solidly for the last week (3000km).
Am just about to cross the great central road to kalgoorlie with the mrs and kids so would much prefer to not have any electrical gremlins, or no starter battery.
Any thoughts, or should I attempt to find an auto elec here??

I'd start with the simple things; check the battery terminals, earth points and fuses; ensure they're intact and/or securely connected. Best to check continuity of each fuse with a multimeter (or even a test lamp/probe).

Start the car and check the voltage at the battery with the multimeter, this should be around 14v with the car running and should be above 12v with the car off.

You don't say if you have a TD5 or V8, that may make a difference in diagnosing it further..

I don't think you could drive the car a great distance with any certainty as it is.

You may also find a few travelers (or maintenance staff etc) around you that have the tools and knowledge to help you diagnose the problem, I'd try to find someone around you to help.

Agree with Carl Start with the basics..

Prepare however, to be replacing the alternator... If you pull the unit thats in there its likely the brushes are jammed or worn away.

Voltage regulator is known to die as well.

Nippon Denso alternator parts are common so might be able to get fixed locally.

If you have a TD5 , the brushes in the alternator are the same as many Toyotas, indeed AFAIR the whole alternator is. So parts should be easily available in Alice Springs.

The brushes in mine ground away and gunged up from oil leaking from the big round plastic cover for the front of the camshaft.

I bought a new alternator but have kept my old one as a spare as there seems nothing wrong with it after I replaced the brushes which is very easy.

+1 for the alternator thing... especially cos that warning is not a "battery warning" even though it's a battery icon, it has nothing to do with the battery as long as the alternator is working... it's officially named "Alternator charge warning lamp" and it's based on the alternator output being hardwired to it... it's not as common as alternator failure but it might be a wiring issue between the alternator and the instrument pack too... you can rule this out by measuring the voltage on the battery with engine running, if you get around 14V the alternator is working.

Hey all, thanks for the replies. I ran the multi with car running and car off and across a few fuses. It all lead to the alternator, got it confirmed by Ayers Rock auto (cannot recommend their service highly enough). Rolled in Friday morning, left Monday afternoon with a new alternator shipped from Adelaide. Car is back on the road and the trek along the great central road continues!!
