    D2 Head Gaskets

I have removed one of the heads on my lo comp 4.0 and need to know whether I should simply replace the head gaskets or get the block relinered or some other type of engine reconditioning.

The car overheated and stalled then wouldn't restart because there was no compression.

Both sides of the gasket had engine oil on it and some head bolts were looser than others.

    1. This is bore 2 and 4. There is some carbon like deposits on top of no 2 piston.

    2. This is head chamber 2 and 4. Similar deposits on chamber 2.

    3. This is bore 6 and 8.

    4. This is head chamber 6 and 8.

The liners seem to be flush with the deck and the bores are smooth with a slight ridge at the top.

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

Not being picky but you should have done a compression test before lifting the heads. That would have identified crook cylinders more accurately. Now that the heads are off I'd suggest removing the sump and popping out a few pistons. The bore in no.8 looks a little like it has blown by the top ring. The heads should be checked by a shop for flatness and surface hardness.

Don't discount the possibility that the crank sensor died with the heat and stopped injection and spark. The 4.0 I wrecked last year had a very melted looking knock sensor on it. The crank sensor didn't look too good either.

Oh and any valve stems sitting lower than the rest means a valve seat has come loose in the head, then they are basically scrap metal IMHO.

    why did it overheat??
If you take the heads off rule of thumb is to have them serviced properly, skimmed, guide seals regrind valves and seats, crack tested, all usually around $350>>$400, for both heads plus gaskets.
as for the bottom end??how many K's??
    any oil leaks,
a bit more info would help(Fotos)
    cheers

Water leak from throttle body pre-heater caused the over heating. Was running water until leaks all found.
    Kms is around 100k.
No obvious oil leaks and oil level half way between marks. Water and oil didnt mix. Sump was pressurized and pushed oil past head gaskets as far as I could tell.

Cleaning the rockers before and after
Did you move the rockers along and look at the underside of the shafts, and the bush in the rockers.
Given the "black gunge" indication of poor engine condition, I would not be surprised to see a lot of wear in the shafts and rockers.
    Regards Philip A
