Thread: td5 heavy clutch

No that doesn't sound normal to me. Mine is pretty light, (pretty much anything is going to feel light though when the other manuals I'm comparing this to are a series 3, a hz kingswood and an Inter tractor).

I'm not really sure how to diagnose that. Doesn't sound hydraulic though. I replaced the clutch master cylinder on mine but the symptoms i was getting were not a heavy clutch, it just wasn't engaging and releasing properly.

Hopefully someone more experienced in these things will pop up shortly.

I put an Exedy single mass flywheel and heavy duty clutch in my TD5 and it has since been heavy too.
Know the history of your new vehicle?

Mine is very heavy as well.

I was use to a 1990 Defender so it didn't seem out of place, until the tyre workshop commented on it being heavy, and then the windscreen fitters.

I then tried another manual Td5 Disco and nearly put my foot through the floor it was so light.

I've had mine for nearly 3 years now, the garage I bought it from said the previous owner had put a clutch in just before he sold it. No idea if that's true as there was no service history with it.

Yep, it worried me thats why I posted.

Its either a plate on the way out or someone has replaced the clutch and put a very heavy one in.

Ive cleaned up oil leaks etc for a roadworthy and now I'll wait to see what leaks come back. I may have to pull gearbox out for oil leaks later so I'll check it out then. Its such a bugger on these things to replace it.

ANyway very happy with the new bus. God they have a lot of grunt. Actually much more powerful than the V8. Amazing. The economy is incredible. Gone from 22l to 11.5 per 100. Fantastic. If i have to put up with a heavy clutch, so be it.

I dont know the history of the vehicle but she left some stuff in the car so I might make a phone call, drop off and ask some more questions. Car seems to be going very well. Motor is in great nick, I did some work but not a massive amount. Very happy so far.

Some of the second hand cars i saw were complete bombs so pretty happy with this one.

Your v8 must have been a d1...or a very sick d2. My d2 v8 averages 15l per 100 k from the burbs in and out to Brisbane...manual. And stock the d2 was way faster than the td5...you are talking 4 or more seconds difference to 100 and the manual td5 was slower than the auto td5 in normal driving.
The td5 uses a different clutch to the v8 but in the manual td5's I drove years ago they felt similar. Cheers

Where is this research coming from Muppet. I have a single Mass and heavy duty clutch and don't really notice any difference to the original. And it's not very heavy to press either.
