    TD5 Driveline Vibration

    Guys,
This is one of the best and informative forums I have seen and there are some dedicated people offering good advice.
Here is my issue, Its a 2004 TD5 Classic auto, 210K on the clock and I have done about 2000 K in it since purchasing it. I am very surprised at its off road capabilities and fuel consumption is better than I expected.
The car has been looked after and serviced regularly.
EGR valve mod done, replacement injector harness ordered otherwise stock std.

When sitting on 100K I feel a vibration thru the whole car, if I feather the throttle it is less. at 80 K its negligible. It is not an engine vibration as I would get it in neutral at 2250 rpm so I have discounted the front pulley until proven otherwise.

I have had the front driveshaft re-balanced and it was found with a small bend in it. Its a big mother and looks like it may have been replaced just before I bought the car, it is not a double cardan shaft type. It was also not in phase either although some people say that it should not be in phase as is traditionally done, so I would welcome some comments on that topic.

I have replaced the rubber type coupling on the rear of the rear driveshaft as it had some cracking and the front uni is ok as is the spline.
Running out of ideas here, tyres perhaps? the car is running 16 inch rims with 245/70R16 Silverstone AT-117 Special tyres that I have never heard of, they look like an 80/20 on highway tread.

I welcome any suggestions on where to look from here

Check the auto and transfer case mounts. I had the exact same symptoms and replaced lots of things.

Turned out to be the TC case mount. They looked fine from the bottom. But the trick was to undo the 15mm nut on the bottom on the mount where it bolts onto the chassis and jack the auto and TC case up. The crack through the rubber was evident, so evident it came out in 2 pieces.

This is a quick low cost replacement that may resolve you problems.

Something else I had noticed, the exhaust was closer to the auto sump than I was comfortable with, this can be adjust pretty easy though.

I assume the vibration has not been around since you bought it, if this assumption is correct then it is not likely to be the different drive shafts.

All D2s are designed to have a Double Cardan shaft, and I would think the angles of the diff pinion and the transfer output shaft were arranged to suit. The single cardan shaft is also on back to front although that may not affect anything.
IMHO , you should beg or borrow a DC shaft to see if that is the problem, which I think it is.

As said above, if the vibration is new, then the front shaft should be OK, if not, replacing the double cardan shaft with a single could be the issue.

But I'd look at what Jazzman suggest first, it probably needs replacing anyway.

Have run a single cardan front shaft. Vibrated like crazy but I was grateful to have it when I needed it!
As said, check auto and engine mounts.
Also agree with PhillipA, get a normal front shaft.

I've had a v8 and now a td5. Both of them had an almost identical slight vibration/ harmonic around 105 kph.

This sounds worse but I'm just saying.

    Good luck.

Remove the front shaft, lock the diff and see what happens.

    Driveline Vibration

I reckon the vibration is getting worse since my trip away in the weekend so I will pull the shaft off and try it with the diff lock in. This shaft was bent and Driveline Services straightened it and rebalanced it.
Has anybody experienced what a cracked flex plate feels like? just an idea, it still drives though.
Had a quick look at the T/C mounts, look ok.
