I had a similar problem, turned out that the alternator top strut/spacer mount was missing allowing the alternator to move over slackening off the tensioner.

    Cheers

Check your harmonic balancer , you can also remove your serpentine belt , start up and shut down to see if the squeak is still there

Thanks to the helpfull contributions and from searching the forum over the past weeks I'm thinking it just might be the Harmonic Balancer on the way out... my symptoms are a non rhythmic intermittent rattley sound on a cold start and a squeak on shutdown when engine is hot - however the HB still looks to be running true with no discernable wobble.

Luckly the D2 is not my daily driver but I'm undecided what course of action to take and how critical it all is at this point....!

Mine squeaked on shutdown for ages until I replaced the Harmonic Balancer. The old one had no obvious movement but had done a fair few ks.

Re squeak: as already mentioned, remove the belt, start the engine, see if its all quiet. A tired belt tensioner doesnt require much effort to move (so you can take off belt) or tends to stay in that one spot. A new or a good tensioner will require quite a bit of leverage.

The squeak on turning off a TD5 can be a sign of the harmonic balancer wearing out. With the belt on, remove the top plastic fan cowl, grab the belt on each side of the harmonic balancer (obviously with the engine OFF) and try and move the belt in each direction, a failing harmonic balancer will turn slightly in each direction.

I've been using the Continental brand belts for ages, and wouldnt use anything but.

    Regards
    Daz

Today I managed to capture the sound that I've been talking about - I'll be able to get to and try the suggestions put forward by DazzaTD5 this week but in the meantime check this out this sound bite..... the recording starts off infront of the grill and then i moved to the Driver side wheel well....
