Hi, if it was the solenoid contacts you should have heard a loud click when the plunger hits, if no click at all(not even a very gentle one) it might be a problem with the relay or ignition switch if you concentrate and hear a quiet click it means the ignition is ok then the most common is bad contact at the small lucar connector on the solenoid, bad contact/corrosion on the starter main positive lead or 'tired' relay... if these contacts are OK when it fails to start give a tug to the starter with something contendent and if it starts then it measn the brushes are worn
