I think ive run out of steam for this ....

I have really really really tried to be an enthusiastic Discovery 2 owner.
Lots of TLC, spend lots of dorayme - but it still wants to annoy me.

I love driving the car, and even enjoy some weekend tinkering in the garage, but seriously, this thing is starting to ruin my weekends.

It seems every week Ive got a new problem, and need to sink more money in to it.

The minster of finance is now giving me so much **** over it, i think im going to have to bail out.

I cant say its big major things each time, but seriously its never ending.

Got a misfire now and an error code for the oxy sensors.
Replaced oxy sensors (ouch that hurt the checkbook), new plugs, but misfire still getting worse.

So new coils and leads now.

But because Im a big bloke with big hands, i have to pull it all apart to get to the coil.

I sold my Prado because i loved driving the D2 more, but since i did that the Toyota gods put a curse on my disco.

So once its fixed i think its going for sale.

In the meantime, I think im going shopping this weekend instead of tinkering (i will stick the disco away in the back shed so i don't see it for a while) unless someone offers me enough to just see it roll away.

Might go to the dark side and see what a good used patrol is like

    Ahh, the first hurdle.
How you respond will decide your fate.
I'd keep it. I've had mine broken or not working properly for 6 months, and finally got it sorted.
Many times I've thought 'should have got an isuzu' or 'should have just got a toyota'.
Do wait a while. Consider this, there's hardly anything else that can go wrong.
Take it on a long drive, wind the window down and listen to the exhaust note. Find a dirt road and sit back as it holds on like it's on rails.
And then if you want to sell it for a soulless patrol, then that's your call, it won't break the little things but it won't excite you either.
I've just fixed mine, and even when it was broken just sitting in it was enough to make me smile again, compared to my boring trio of japanese cars I regularly drive (including a nissan 4wd).

If it is the project car, stick it on the back burner for a while.
If it is your only car, get a reliable car, something like a Camry. Not another 4wd.

My first Landrover was bought from a fellow who was sick of it breaking every weekend. It became a reliable daily drive for me for a number of years.
Interestingly, the previous owners Patrol was then breaking something each weekend.

Keep the Landy as a hobby car. They're fun.

Or, better still, the next hobby:

But, you'll need lots of steam for that.

Over many years of watching and listening I've concluded there is not much difference owning any of the main 4wd brands.
I agree a Land Rover owner can have their hand in their pocket often, but often for small amounts.
When(not if) the Toyota/Nissan's need work it's often a deep pocket requirement.
I often get a ribbing about being a Landie owner and the costs but those giving the grief don't talk about their 3.0Ltr rebuilds at big $$$.
    Cheers, Kyle

Yes I like the Disco when it's going and yes it hasn't left me stranded,,,,,,,,yet but I have never owned a vehcile that has broken down or cost as much as this to keep it running. Some days I sympathize with it as it's pretty tough up here in the NT. During the dry the roads are rough and hard, durign the wet the water is often over the bonnet and mud over the wheels. But I am waying up if the extra comfort and performance is worth the extra stress of worring what will break next, when will it break, will it get me home from where ever remote area I go?

    Happy Days

CaptainJack - did you not say this was to be a project car? When ever my wife questions what I spend on my LR's I remind her it is better to have a Land Rover as a mistress - cost as much but keeps you out of trouble....

Good luck in resolving your conflicting passions...but remember the good times!
