Powder coating v painting LR rims

Hi all. Regarding factory alloys. There have been threads on this but it seems more members are getting powder coating in particular done. I would like to have your experiences and also whether there is any truth in the idea that powder coating weakens rims. I can get mine done at powder coaters who do a few LR's for about $75 oer rim. Going matt black would interest me.

    Cheers

Don't go matte black, go satin. It'll look like a busted arse old patrol with flat black.

Not sure about the powder coating weakening rims , but I've had satin acyrilic on for two and a half years , through sand, mud , pea gravel etc, without any flaking or peeling , originally did them by rubbing back with 800 grit , wax and grease remover then 3 coats , the idea was to see how they went, thinking that if they got scratched I could just spray over with the same paint ........ Still haven't had to yet?

    Thanks Ozscott.

Mine are painted matt black. I used etch primer and then a few coats of matt black high temp engine enamel (the extreme stuff not the regular engine enamel). Much cheaper than power coating and as good if not better finish.

Thanks gents. Can you boys tell me where you got the primers/etchers/wax removers and paints from and what brand. I take it you both removed the tyres? I am ok with a spray gun (White Knighted my kitchen cupboards etc) so i am keen to crack on.

Bunnings for the paint. Can't remember the brands but get etch primer for alloy and use the very hi temp engine enamel. You'll need 180 sandpaper, turps cloths, masking tape and newspaper.

No need to take the tyres off; just newspaper and masking tape. I did two wheels at a time as I couldn't safely have all four wheels off at the same time.

    Here is how to it:

Mark where weights are and remove or just paint over them.
Thoroughly clean the wheel inside and out.
Use the 180 sandpaper to rough it up a bit.
Clean again and use turps then dry (air would be handy here).
Mask up with newspaper and masking tape.
Then a couple coats of etch primer and let dry. I think for 24 hours, instructions are on the can.
Then several thin coats of engine enamel until it looks good. I think again to leave it for 24 hours before putting back on the car.
Put weights back on if you removed them.

    I think that's how I did it.

    Good luck!

    Cheers

That is a delicious colour that burn orange!

still, satin all the way, itll match any bar work U have, its normally satin black, has that slight sheen to it, makes it look deeper. each to their own.
