(Although i wasn't laughing when I did it on Tuesday !)
I read that post, I was pleased to see the problem was not that severe.

I'm likely to cheat and use a trolley jack.

That's what we used in Alice Springs and it's the smart way to do it.

By yourself on the side of the road is not recommended.

What happened to your Discovery 2 today?

Just finished 6300km trip towing our cub camper and besides a little dribble from the transfer case nothing went wrong and performed faultlessly

    New shoes :)

The guy at the tyre place wasn't game to try and squeeze 265/70 r16 on the rear door mount... Another project to do.

I run 265/75/16 And for my size tyre to fit on the door you need to remove the carrier flip it drill 2 holes job done

Depends on tyre. I managed to make 265/70/17 Scorpion work but it was an inteference fit on the rear bar....so 75 is out without a bracket reversal

    Cheers

Don't flip and drill - you'll end up with cracked studs... extra hinge wear and worse rear vision.

Drill 6 holes and raise the carrier.

Cant see how redrilling would be any different to what i have done with 265/75/16

No, your not the exception, I would have done at least 10 of them like that , none of them spend all their time on the bitumen and no cracks ( not sure how you crack a stud ) no extra hinge wear over the years on the 6 or so that I still see
