While pulling out cargo space trim to remove second and third row seatbelts, I decided I would recut the floor carpet for a possible future fuel pump replacement.
Then I got curious, being the 4th-ish owner with a mostly complete service history, has the fuel pump ever been tinkered with? Removed the cover plate and...

Found half the dirt in the Pilbara (Locality of Gary's formative early years) hiding under there. Original fuel pump going strong at 226k kms.

I fought the internal battle of "if it aint broke don't fix it," versus, "prevention is the best cure" and gave the cavity and electrical plug a good clean out. Hopefully my paranoia and preparation for having to replace it someday will mean it lasts another 200 000 km.

Boggled by the amount of wasted space behind the side trims in the cargo area. Especially once the seatbelt go. Going to try pick up some spares from a wreck and have a cut and redesign experiment.

If you pull out the exit air vents you can fit lots of spares like water pumps, belts etc in there.

Old waterpump from the V8.
Previous owner of the D2(Owner #2) stated that the owner of the vehicle before him(owner #1) complained that the D2 overheated and they couldn't figure out why!

I'm thinking maybe this red plug looking thing may have had a lot to do with it.

On removing the pump, it didn't come out. Pump was tossed away upon removal and it still didn't come out.
It was only when I put the pump in the engine bay of the spares car, that it rattled and I noticed it.

With the engine running(ie. pump plumping water) I'm surprised that the plastic thing wasn't lodged into the hose going to the thermostat. It came out freely from the pump.

Just on the restrictor, I have seen posts where a restrictor like that is positioned in the inlet of the radiator header tank to enable the clamp to be done up tight.

I thought it applied to 38A but maybe to D2 also.

They in rare cases can slip down the pipe and into the water pump.

ps. I did mention that this restrictor was (what I assumed to be) the pump outflow, but on looking at RAVE's cooling system diagram I now see that it is in fact the pump inlet.

maybe someone has tried to fix something up and in the process of fixing it up they couldn't remember where everything went back in.
This thing was inside the pump inlet pipe(as in image 2) from the thermostat.
Too large to fit between the header tank to the pump coolant hoses.

The only thing that just occurred to me looking through RAVE this arvo is that maybe someone mistakenly placed it in there, but the original intent may have been for it to go from the thermostat to the engine inlet pipe to restrict the bypass flow.
I've been reading up a lot on the 'overheating' issue that V8's supposedly have using those bypass thermostats types, and that they run cooler using an inline thermostat.

So going by the shape of this thing, I reckon it may have originally been fitted to the bypass side of the thermostat. Judging by the shape of the thing most likely at the thermostat hose end, where the flange was supposed to hold against the hose.
Someone must have changed the thermostat, and mistakenly placed this restrictor in the wrong hose (being the inflow to the pump instead of the bypass hose) .. and as the plastic is very flimsy, it's heated up, melted, deformed in shape just enough to be forced through the hose and to the end of the pump.

Could that sound like a plausible use for such a device?
If the overheating issue is due to recirculated radiator water entering back into the radiator as opposed to heading to the engine .. if you restrict the bypass flow back to the radiator(theoretically) a greater portion of the water flow would then go back to the engine instead of the radiator.

Did u rebuild ur compressor also? I'm looking at replacing my springs with airbags like it used to be prior to me buying it. What brand of bags did u buy?

I've partially installed the cables from the main battery via a Traxide SC80 to the sppare battery. I'm still to install the battery, it will sit on the air compressor shelf, and the SC80. I'm off to a metal shop tomorrow to buy some steel sheets to make a stone guard for the battery.

It was short and sweet, 15 days of ownership, has led to half a garage of stuff that needs to be cleaned and sold. Plus a few bits to go on my rig.

It was a 2003 V8. I think a few bits have already gone to forum members. Headlights went to someone doing a facelift conversion.

No rebuild on the compressor, looked ok (looked to be new!!) and operated on the bench before fitting. Still might get a kit but "if it ain't broke"!!
Air springs are Contitech got'em from Mario (Roverlord)
I also replaced the complete air line harness as the previous owner just cut/ripped them out.

Also did the setup with the Nanocom, took a few times to load the coil to air settings, used a suggestion from sierrafery and set the level using car stands under the chassis and a level in the boot, levelled across the sill just inside the rear door then levelled the boot floor front to back.
Pretty easy!!

Did a short trip with the family yesterday and had four bikes on the back and a bit of gear and works really well, pumped up to level again and drives very smooth!

Think I might have a small leak from a fitting or the valve block?? As it's appearing to drop about 10mm over night (measured at the wheel arches both sides) so will be checking asap.
