Keen to keep the D2 on the (and off the) road though.

I wish I could agree with you, but mine went at 178,000km. Still, it seems many, many blocks are fine and it’s about time you had a bit of luck. All the best.

Mate its a mystery why mine went. Block and head have just under 60,000k on them and they are from a P38 - so back when the motors had slightly more consistent castings and where the best thicknesses went to the range rover - ie 4.6. The motor I am getting is 4.0 from a P38 - again no issues in 130,000k. My D1 has 300,000k on the stock 3.9 and runs like a dream...I am starting to think there is some substance to the view that the Motronic system ran too lean and internally hot therefore, for these motors. Anyway, getting ahead of myself as I haven't stripped the head off yet.

I will need an engine hoist as I am going to strip off intake (and make sure its not something silly first) and then assuming nothing obvious I might take off that one head, and assuming its not an obvious head gasket failure I will pull the motor out.

Any tips for unbolting the motor from the 5 speed manual and removing? Likewise any tips for putting the 'new' 4.0 in?

    Cheers

Dont assume anything,, keep digging untill the reason is clear.

I renewed the head gaskets and fitted a new set of lifters on the 4.0l V8 in my D2a at 250k, It has now done 280k and still going strong.
I think its the luck of the draw or the way they are driven that decides how long a 4.0l will last.

Yep Trout who knows. Driven with vehicle sympathy and low temps, regularly Penrite oil changes etc.

Pedro - good point re crank. One day I might re-co the 4.0 with the 4.6 gear if I feel the need. It will be fine as a 4.0 though.

    Cheers

PS,. My digging will be over X-mas and I will do a thread on it.

Andrew, consider a diesel conversion. If nothing else, it'll make Pedro wince.

I swapped out the V8 for the TD5 and the autobox for the R380. I don't think Pedro noticed. TD5 could be swapped with the 3L V6 and the 6 speed Getrag box. I'd like a bit more grunt.

I had intended to get 5 X Kuhmo 51 A/t tyres but as things worked out that didn't work out.
Again, the joy of living in the bush.
As the BFG muddies that were on the car when I brought it were on their last legs, or is that treads? I decided I had to go to Mt Isa & see what I could get.
So, I have ended up with 5 new Toyo AT2's & I'm very happy with them.
I drove home over 100k of good hiway, 120k of rough, rocky dirt & a couple of 100k of good to bad bitumen.

I ran them at 37psi all the way & they were great. Very quiet, I could actually hear the engine fan come in & out which I have never heard before. This has now motivated me to replace the windscreen as the wind coming through the top is now very loud.
They gripped all surfaces very well, I used to get a bit of understeer on fast sweeping gravel, that is gone & on the dirt the car was less prone to tram track or wriggle about. The ride has improved 98.37% approximately.
There was no chipping, cuts or scuffing despite the fact I deliberately flogged it across the rough bits.

I also got a wheel alignment done which was not out by much but worth doing anyway.

In fact the D2a has been running so well I'm starting to worry.

SWMBO has decreed that the next couple of lots of money will be spent on her car! Her Delica does need a bit of work, she knocked the front off with a roo & I think some bearings may be on the way out.
    So all good.

I will give a further report on the Toyo's once I have a few K's on them.
Now, to try convince the kids to wash my car. Not likely!

HD donut (BMW M3) and complete exhaust with a ceramic coated dump, high flow cat and straight through muffler, yet it's no louder in the cabin than stock.
    Happy camper.
