I drove from Williamstown to Hunter and Cuthill in Geelong in a two car convey with the Freelander, so that they can change the oil filter on the Freelander. This afternoon we will go back to collect the Freelander.

OH! I would have thought that if anyone can change the TD5s oil filter, nothing is impossible to achieve. You now have the life skills to accomplish anything!

Don't tell me the oil filter in the Freelander is even harder than the TD5!! I can't imagine even LR being able to design an oil filter change any worse than that(or the D1's stupidly convoluted front brake lines).

The main flow filter on the TD5 is a doddle with a filter pliers. I think I removed the turbo heat shield as well.

The Freelander 2 is a royal pain in the arse.

I can’t believe all this drama over the TD5 spin on filter.

I’m built like a gorilla and never had a problem getting arm/hand/fingers into position - removing and replacing the filter.

The vehicle has Aux battery, Provent, 7100 remote reservoir shocks etc all in the way and it’s still a relatively simple job.

Yes I don't understand the problem either. I just use a plastic bag over it when I spin it off. The only hassle is putting it back on without spilling some oil out of it. Otherwise it's quite simple. What happened to your Discovery 2 today?

I think the the relative nature of it, rather than the just the job itself.
(My)Tdi is a bit of a pain, but would be made easier if I jacked the car off the ground to increase the clearance between axle and filter.
I think I've done about 8, maybe 10 oil filter changes now, have yet to not get a litre of old diesel oil all over me.
I've tried the old ice cream tub under the filter method too, but still haven't had success.
Also draining the sump .. right royal PITA that one is as the oil drains directly onto the sway bar! The quick connect drain plug helped that debacle no end .. straight into the 10lt tub, no worries now.

With regard to the 'relative' aspect .. so many cars are so much easier to change oil filters, why did LR see it important to make it so convoluted.
Few months back I did dads 307 Pug. I had my doubts. But what a breeze. Has one of those cartridge style jobs. Plastic body over the filter, regular spanner on the cover off it comes, no drips, nothing. filter cartridge thing in, cover on .. 30sec job.

But like you said, it's not really that hard, and like you do, we just spin it on tight by hand, so it comes off by hand when the time comes.

Hey! Another question. Heat shield. Bro just dropped his off. IIRC it's held on by nut/bolts, or pop rivets(maybe). I can't remember, but he said he wasn't sure how to re fit it .. maybe the pop rivet bit.
I can't remember it at all, and it's way down the list of things I'm doing(or more accurately can't be stuffed doing in this weather at the moment).

At the moment I'm sorting out the demonic shambles that a previous owner perpetrated on the dash centre console!

    Turbo Heat Shield

The painful bolt on the rear is hard to access. The is a steel part with a hole drilled in it. I angle grinded the bottom of this, so that the steel part fits over the bolt. The bolt is never removed, just loosened and tightened. I found it very difficult to get that bolt started before this mod.
