I’ve always done the spin on filter by hand. Both directions.
I use a ground down band type tool.
Works fine.
So far it's worked on Ryco, Genuine and Mahle
To be fair my research afterwards showed it would not fit Mahle which is what went on . Apparently only Cooper andLandrover factory filters are the only two it will fit.
Tombie, been a while since I read up on your old D2. Didn’t you have a dual battery under the bonnet? So did you have to remove the tray each time?
This is what you need.

The Mahle filter is about 8-10mm shorter than the others , so the band can get underneath.
The band filter tools are about $15 on Ebay.
I fitted a longer one last time and got it off OK as the thread made a bit of space but to get one on and tight is a task.
The Mahle and tool are the ducks guts, and I too have a second battery tray. You have to tighten , turn , loosen , turn tighten, turn and so on.

I will install a remote filter kit one-day.....
I changed out a blown globe on the drivers side low beam, Other than that the old D2a is running like a Swiss watch[bigrolf]
