With my continuing intermittent misfire, I tested the camshaft sensor with an oscilloscope and all seemed good. Took it out for a run with the misfire still there and the PAS pump failed. I thought that the steering was a little heavy when I took off. PAS pump only a year old.
Frustrating to say the least.
My next move is swap the coil packs (these ones are only two years old) and of course the PAS pump.

Yesterday I changed my sump gasket on jack stands.( not recommended)
What a **** of a job.
I didn't remove the cross member or exhaust as I knew it could be done without doing that, although in retrospect , if on a hoist i would do that. You have to sit the chassis rails on stands so the front axle dangles.
Aside from the 20 bolts which are pretty hard to get to and need variations of extensions, I found that the oil drain from the centrifugal oil filter needed a 10MM tube spanner which I luckily had as there is no room for spanners. You need 3/8 sockets generally on many bolts due to limited side room. The side ones are generally fine with a 1/2 inch drive ratchet and long extension.
I used the revised bolt tightening sequence tightening the ones in the middle first, though the existing (non Landrover) gasket which I changed about 8 years ago was leaking everywhere.
It is still a mystery if the rear gasket is in position ( as there is no way you can see it) but I think so as I did a short test drive. All of the "plugs " in the sump are in place. I used thin zip ties to locate the rear corners of the gasket on the sump and zip ties along the sides in a few holes. HINT use very thin zip ties as thicker ones get stuck even with the bolts only finger tight.
The biggest fights I guess were getting the sump on around the transmission cooler pipe and getting the oil drain back on as mine has studs. RAVE says bolts. The drain had to be bent back and it sort of went out of position. After several minutes trying to bend it so it lined up on the studs with multi grips I got out my dead blow hammer and gave it a whack and miraculously it popped right onto both studs. GOD was looking favourably on me.
While the sump was off I checked the oil pump bolt and it was still tight so I left sleeping dogs lie and the relief valve plug was in correct position. I put in a new Landrover bolt 8 years ago and it looks good.
Next time it will be done on a hoist by someone else. I am getting too old for this stuff.

I miss the Deefer from that perspective, it had 105+mm between the front bump stops.
And that was after the springss had settled quite a few years after fitting.
A few days ago I “threw caution to the winds” and performed the “TD5 airbox mod”. A little butchery is required but if you don’t rush it or try to remove too much at a time you can get a neat result. And now after 2-1/2 days of my regular 85km each way commute I can say I’m pleasantly surprised.... I have no regrets doing it ...... there is a noticeable difference to throttle response on acceleration on take offs, and in general it seems to be more free running. The engine is definitely breathing better and it sort of feels like I’m driving with a tail wind [emoji16]
And as if to confirm my impressions, the air filter restriction indicator now doesn’t “light up” under sustained hard boost.

Installed the new vgt turbo and allisport intercooler over the last couple of days. Very happy with the results. No more power surge as the turbo kicks in. Just smooth power from the start. Also my egt has dropped considerably.
I am running a tune from years ago but I am now waiting in a new tune to take full advantage of the vgt which is being made by td5 alive.
Also cut my airbox up like the post above to free up the intake a bit
Changed out the PAS pump and stripped the thread in the head that secures the auxiliary bracket.
One step forward, one step back.
