Keep going, not that I like being jealous, but it is how we see what others do to their toys.

I nipped down the wreckers today and got an IGG 000010 unit from a V8 D2 (even cheaper than the other experimental one, 25 bucks) and fitted it before I left the carpark for the 30k trip home. Alas it behaves the same oversensitive way the 040 unit does.

Got home and put the td5 tcu back in, will live with the 83km/h shift into 4th and revvy upshifts for now
Agreed! Have been also been reading the TCU threads with great interest but a little distracted by other developments.

Actually do have a question regarding the use of the V8 TCU in a TD5 and that regards the use of it with the Ashcroft V8 Auto Torque Convertor - are the above with this done with this mod, or, are they all with stock standard TD5 Auto Torque Convertors???

Mine has a TRS tuned MSB101340 ecu but my gearbox and torque converter are stock

I get the impression from various threads on different forums that you just need to jag the right V8 tcu to work and stock TC or not the shift points are whatever is programmed into the tcu, but that is my interpretation of what I've read your mileage may vary.

Shift points are indeed programmed into the EAT, but it's not that simple.. there are a number of factors that are additive or subtractive to the situation, so a hard fast rule can't really be made.

In my experience, the V8 EAT doesn't really work well with the TD5 unless other adjustments are made to the tune.

However I have NOT tried all versions of the unit, but I believe there are early and late TD5 ones, then there are 4.0 and 4.6, then there would be revisions to them as well, however the changes are likely to be somewhat incremental in nature.

    Cheers
    James

Interesting start to Head Change Over

Had a bit of fun today stripping out the engine bay in prep for the Head, manifold, turbo an EWP along with the double battery tray and the rear ARB battery tray where the air compressor is going to call home.

Late start as an order put into Bunnings on Monday MORNING for the E Torx was still not ready today and sitting on the phone for over an hour and half waiting to hear this was the proverbial PIA. Meant that didn't separate the head as did not want to use a 1/4" drive one on the torx of the head bolts. Pick up is booked for 9.00 tomorrow morning. Customer Service Bunnings, not on your life - no mention on the website or FAQ's that what I have found now that orders will take days and even one of my friends waited over a week, be warned.

The hoses from the bulkhead to the diesel heater were impossible to get off,, tomorrows problems now.

Did have one other issue, the P38 Auto Transmission cooler I purchased over a year is really no bigger than the D2 one fitted... Just has screw on threads??? Had not opened it due to didn't want oil leaking out before today. Hmmm disappointing at the moment it states RR1168?????

Planning the EWP with radiator out and it is interesting as to placement and size, the thermostat is of course going so will have a short pipe to the engine block only.

Although there was a lot of crap when taking off the intercooler to manifold pipe, it was more of a surprise to find that the exhaust manifold had been blocked off and the exhaust manifold has been tinkered with as well.

There has been work previously done on this no doubt,

Given the rust in the cooling system, I would be changing the welsh plugs and oil cooler innards.
Someone has not used coolant for a while.

Coolant was certainly red and full, will be doing the oil cooler but have not looked at the welsh plugs, will certainly be checking on them today

The very one, as with all tools have made the choice only to go quality (the buy once philosophy has taken a long time to be learnt) and more so the best drive for them as well. Even so, these were only $99 and of course 1/2" against $40 for the cheap brands with smaller drive - just a bit too important to get this part right.

    Head off

Short day due to other circumstances but when we lifted the head was surprised to see a solid little friend.. Head lifted off cleanly and without impedance.

    20210923_115358.jpg

Sooo the head had been off and judging by the state of the gaskets recently in its 260K life and the plastic on the radiator and cleanliness of such would indicate that this was also changed (the hoses are all dark and springy as well by the way), was waiting to take it out to see whether it would need changing and it certainly does not.

Bit of fun getting the injectors out and in the end a tent peg served us perfectly, tomorrow have another go at getting the copper washes off stuck tight and flush(again fresh and clean but changing anyway).

Bit the bullet and purchased a new P38 auto cooler.

It was interesting that the inlet manifold was still covered in black gunk, the egr had already been blanked off, no doubt when they replaced the head but it obviously had not been cleaned, along with sooty MAP. Again the FPR and associated area were all clean and came apart ever so easily, so have a spare now as uprating it with the ford one. Excitement is now building at getting it on the road with the performance gain let alone out in the dust and dirt.

Some niggles that pop their heads out after doing stuff.

So a while ago I swapped the TCU out of the TD5 and now running the V8 version.
Other than the annoyance of the highway running, mitigated a bit by not using cruise control so much ..
The other anomaly, I only noticed .. a week later! .. the gear indicator in the lower dash area is now not 'indicating'.

Strange. I'll have a poke around with the nanocom to see what settings this may relate too, otherwise ...
Only reason I noticed it so late in the test drive period is that tank is full and I only check to see how many klms I've driven so far.. and then noticed .. oooh! no D symbol.
This airbag steering wheel is really annoying when compared to the D1.

My work for this weekend will be to pull drivers seat and repad it a bit restore some height back into it.
