SupporterYep, they all have heatshields. They are also meant to have a little sound proofing cover that bolts on the back of the head, I've only ever seen one in real life, and I had to purchase it to do that!
A number of years ago I was working on a Discovery 2 TD5, there was a misunderstanding between myself and the owner and they picked it up before I had finished, the heatshield was not fitted, 300 km later the d34 optima was about 60% of the original height on the side closest to the turbo, didn't make me feel very good!
Cheers

SupporterI tossed brothers' heatshield into the spare parts tub ... with the notion that one day I'd figure out a way to get it back on. can't be too hard... except for a lazy bugger like me.
A few trips we've done now, his D2 has an ARB compressor fitted inboard of the ABS pump .. so on a drive of length, the unshielded turbo pumps out more than enough heat to limit the operation of the compressor for more than about 30secs or so.
Compressor is still a good foot or so from the turbo, but the heat is too much for it.
So, lazy bugger .. me! .. got a turbo heat snail/blanket/cover doodad to snuggle up and over the turbo ... and compressor likes it this way now.
Arthur.
All these discos are giving me a heart attack!

A good spot for the ARB compressor is under the drivers seat with the air connection aimed to the front just behind the little plastic door thing. Nice and cool spot.

Ah! great minds think alike - my son calls them turbo beanies
I have the ARB Auxiliary battery tray with an ARB Compressor mounted on it. The tray came with it’s own heat shield onto which I’ve mounted the remote oil filter. The compressor is for diff lockers but I also use it for tyre inflation and it has never given the problems that you experience. The tray heat shield likely plays a part in that, but also my compressor doesn’t pull its air from the hot engine compartment - it pulls cool, dust free, air from the cabin via a short breather hose thru the firewall

Silly fool me, had assumed it was the PS pump that failed last week. Had fitted a second hand one and this time thought would get a new one. Well went to fit it today and a few seconds of staring at the damage, it dawned on me, its the ACE pump that failed we had a very good laugh! First quote for this was $1500, more than I paid for the D2.

The ACE light did come on when on the tracks but this was after a branch lodged underneath and the Nanocom gave a speed warning... May have caused a leak but did not see it on the inspection on the day.
Think will get a second hand one from UK as they work out at least half the price of the ones I have seen to date available here. Just going to fit a fan belt for a D2 without ACE, might be a rollypolly on the road but at least I can drive it.
Fitting a high power Davies Craig 14" fan 1500cm - to replace the standard AC fan at the same time. Had been looking at the 11" brushless but DC recommended the 14 at quite a saving I might add.
This to be hooked up to work in unison with the EF, switchable and not used in the turned off cool down period.
