My D2 Td5 took me to Melbourne (and actually brought me back too !) start of the month towing a furniture trailer to pick up my wayward youngest.
I started off with my custom tune ecu and the V8 trans controller and had a stock tune ecu and the Td5 trans controller with me, swapped things around for the first few hundred kays and added to my knowledge base.
What went wrong was at some point b4 I got to Melbourne it started whistling like it does when the exhaust manifold leaks (been there heard that), but started to kangaroo when I put the foot down too much/fast, having had this problem when I first got it and it was plumbed with the wastegate modulator bypassed, I thought it had stuffed itself again or was leaking from a split hose so carried on to the next fuel stop and found that the pressure hose going to the bottom of the wastegate modulator had popped off.
Of course no end of putting it on while driving kept it on and being hot on the hands and tedious to keep pulling over I gave up and feathered the throttle the rest of the way to Melbourne, loaded up and headed straight back to Adelaide.
I had left home at 7pm, had tools but not much I could do throughout the night other than change back to the stock tune ecu which alleviated the overboost kangarooing, so knowing the issue I drove all the way back to Adelaide gingerly rather than worry about why it kept popping off, and got home a bit frustrated I couldn't cruise up the slopes without a big slowdown but a good test of the vehicle on a decent run.
I replaced the hose with a new longer piece so I could fit it with the wastegate modulator unbolted and eyeball that it was fully on the modulator inlet and all good from then.
Lessons learnt is that my rough (understatement with how I have butchered the fuel tables) amateur tuning is pretty good and makes a goodly amount of grunt but that the V8 trans controller which I love around town as it lets me cruise around at 1350 rpm at 60 km/h is an oversensitive frustrating thing when towing even trying to nurse it .
I am now back to the Td5 trans controller around town and to my surprise with the tune pushing it up the revs quicker it changes quite nicely and quickly gets into 4th just doesn't lock the clutch which I do miss.
My opinion now is that next upgrade is a V8 torque converter.
For anyone who read this far and remembers I keep removing things the removal of the fuel 'cooler' has not caused any issues and on the long run there was no heat creep upwards, fuel was never closer than 5 degrees below coolant temp (and never has been even in the high temp days around town) and in the last few hundred kays in the wee hours when outside temps were down it was 15 degrees cooler than coolant temp.
And I replaced my slightly weeping turbo drain pipe gasket yesterday.
NO I AM NOT GOING TO REMOVE AND BLOCK OFF THE TURBO DRAIN PIPE TO PROVE YOU CAN DO WITHOUT IT !!
I am not THAT determined to minimise things hanging off the donk
