'IZI' came to stay(D2a) last week.
Poor old 'ICY' (brothers unwanted D2, which became mine by default) had to deal with my utter stupidity a couple weeks back, had to lay up for a short while till I tended his wounds.
I swear, I'm usually good at analyzing problems, eg, wheel bearings and whatnot. Well, not this time. He's been groaning under the load of a left hand curve for a while, but a very muted groan, that indicated that I had a bit of time to sort him.
I acquired RHS rear hub(genuine/Timken type) using my kidneys and various other less important body parts ... ouch! ... but hadn't had time to get it done.
Anyhow, out with missus one night and ICY starts grinding to a halt. Felt like centre diff locked and bound up. Took it very very cautiously, pulled up in service lane and tried to see what's going on. but late at night can't see much. "felt" like front diff or centre diff binding.
Called bro for a rescue and next day trailered ICY home during more daylight like hours. Obvious as all hell what the problem was. Totally collapsed RHS front wheel bearing. My initial reaction was HUH?. Zero feedback through steering, no wobbles, no vibes, zero noise. All noise came from back end(through the lefthanders). At the least I'd have expected some kicks, bucks, even an amigo or three to warn of impending catastrophe. ZIP!
Anyhow, I had to get back to Melb to now get more parts, but more important to collect IZI(a D2a). This takes time from out here.. so the day before, ICY got his medical exam and repatriation work done .. in the outpatients zone.
Didn't have time to do rear, zero freeplay wobble upon straining the hub, as bro needed him to do some haul work on a new machine he acquired too. ICYs rear bearing will get a look at in a day or two.
But what an imbecile I am sometimes ... never had a collapsed hub like that. Total misdiagnosis on that one.
IZI was rescued from the mistreatment of a wild zoo keeper or something! holy carp I've sen some garbage workmanship over the years, but the rtv goop job on the rocker cover is a total laugh in this instance. And that was the less idiotic stuff discovered on him.
Having just done the front hub on ICY, and (not really) battling the font axle nut .. had to bash it a bit, I initially tried to stand on the breaker .. but it came of much easier than doing ICYs LH front about 7 years back. RH had to whacked to shock it off, but not as much of a struggle(for me).
Two of IZI's wheel nuts ... $%)*!!@(^^# ... what a nightmare. If axle nut was done up to 490newts, I reckon two of IZIs wheel nuts were over 1K of Issacs favourite force. I jumped I heaved(and I'm a jumping heffer in terms of mass too) ... nuthin'
I bashed with the masher, same. Old ryobi gun is only capable of about 400Nm, but I had to hit it for as long as my arms could take it's vibrational forces. Nothing. In the end, it was heffer like jumping on the breaker that finally got them off.
FWIW: ryobi did manage most other nuts with some time. But I know it's not up to the task of very tight stuff(that's not its' purpose, and it's an old model). I actually ran out of puff myself first and had to take a short break. Wrong type of break [bigwhistle],considering my health risk, but short as said.
Then came the most stupid of stupidity imaginable. Note that he was driven from Melb to country vic for his new home, very vague steering. Once home, during his underbelly check, balljoints, tierods, brakes, etc ... drop arm nut finger tight and washer not tabbed over! nut hadn't unraveled to nearly off, but at least explained totally vague steering.
So wheel nuts at 1K Nm, and steering nuts at 0Nm ... some people think a bit different I reckon.
Anyhow, that was D2 adventures past week and a half for me.
