    WOW!
D2's all behaving nicely for over a week

Well ... brothers misbehaved a little the other day ...

    20220326_163357_sml.jpg

with no trans fluid left in the trans ,... had to get towed home of course.
But I had the foresight to expect this would happen, and ordered the hoses a few months ago.

Had the plan to change them before one of them blew up along with a trans service and change to dipstick pan as well .. but busy life doesn't always allow us to do the things we want too.
Drivers side quick quick connect was a right PITA to remove too.

Can only hope no damage to trans.

    Starter

Well must be unlucky, only got two starts from the starter when it 'failed' but taken it off and replacing the contacts and plunger, the battery contact was in a word, stuffed.

Interestingly, the starter contact was in a reasonable condition and it would have been possible to not remove the starter and just replace the battery contact and plunger insitu... Still a pretty simple job, the plunger by the way all pitted was only about 50% thickness of the new one and $35 a cheap fix. Have gotten two more complete sets coming from alibaba at just $7 odd each.

Been thinking about it and for sure at the price it is worth keeping a set in the tool box or glovebox for the inevitability of it, if I was out on the tracks would be just be doing the plunger and battery contact before removing the starter - if the starter contact was gone then probably have to remove the starter although with care this probably be done insitu as well.

The SLS had dropped down with repeated attempted starting but there was still enough room to get under with the 2" lift and do the job by the way, no need for a hoist or lifting the D2.

Well, back in September last year my D2 auto decided that the road was a better place for the ATF than in the gearbox so it decided to rupture the passenger side hose when we were about 115km from home at the end of a 15,000km trip including the Gibb River Road and the Great Central Road. We were lucky...

Forward drive ceased forthwith of course. Got it flat topped home and replaced the hoses and refilled it with a bunch of expensive Transmax Z. All was well for a month or so. Didn't do any towing or anything hard though.

The first trip with the camper saw it start to slip after about 150km. Within another 50 or so km it went from slipping a bit to slipping a LOT and by the time I got back home it had drive only in first and even then LOTS of slipping.

Parked it on the nature strip and let it sit in disgust so it could take a long hard look at itself.

Today it was put on a flat top and taken to the gearbox doctor.

When I got this car it was CHEAP because lockup wouldn't happen reliably so I had it rebuilt then - the cause was the oil pump being on the way out. First rebuild - $4,000.

This time I've been quoted $5,000 with new pump, new solenoids, new flex plate, new clutches (steel and friction), new HD TC and the relevant HP24 bits. The new hoses will be genuine LR and NOT that other well known brand.

So two auto rebuilds in about 25,000km.

We came awfully close to just parting it out and getting something else but the prices of cars with nearly equal capabilities made it an economic imperative that we repair this one.
    Cheers,

    That sucks...

Due to my own slackness, I've had several of those hoses pop off rendering the car immobile.

However I'm yet to replace or rebuild an auto in one, I don't know why?

My suggestion to anyone would be too stop driving immediately if you notice the auto slipping after a hose failure, it's possible that the level needs checking after refilling, and that's why you are getting slip... This is what I have done.

The other thing in my favour would be the catastrophic nature of my hose failures, so it goes from fine to full stop in seconds, so I'm not running for any distance with low fluid levels - this will definitely kill the box.

    Cheers
    James

I'll have to keep an eye on the brothers' too now.
Same episode, just different in that my burst hose was a very low(30-40k/h speeds).

I'm hoping that the box is OK. It was rebuild some time not long before the bro got it, he had to get a new TC for it tho .. got it rebuilt by a torque converter specialist.

trans fluid that all dumped onto the road was very clean too, so one can only hope it's still ok.

D2 is currently parked up in the shed getting more stuff done than just the hoses too.
One of the things I'm going to do is get an old RRC or D1 sump pan so it has an easily accessible dipstick for checking trans fluid levels.

condenser fan semi seized up. Hasn't worked for a while(that I know of).

Ripped a dual fan setup out of a 00's model Camry at pick-a-part.

    20220401_161502_sml.jpg

Works well. Not sure if faster or slower, as I don't have a baseline to compare with.
The original spun up ... slowly ... when hotwired up to a battery, but totally smoked the wiring, and damn nearly incinerated me!
I tried to clean up/free up the original motor but no good.

Toyota one works smoothly. The trick with the toyota one is the orientation of the plug relative to the fixing wings.
On the dual fan toyota setup, the other fan doesn't fit .. is a different fan model. The plug is on the other side of the mounting wing(compared to this one shown).

Toyota fan motor also is about 5 or so mm thicker so pushes the fan closer to the radiator, but still doesn't protrude out of the housing/shroud.
Also, motor spins the opposite manner, so wiring needs to be reversed too(to push .. not pull ... as it does on the Camry).

While it's not new, at least the Camry fan motor hasn't been dunked into some sloppy gloopy mud like the bros' D2 has been at some point .. ie. hoping it'll last a good number of years to come.

    cheap fix!

    What a blast

Yesterday, fixed the ABS sensor which it turned out had pulled on the tracks the other week. Simple job and replaced with the original from the axle before the Ashcroft's axles and new hub were installed - the new hub sensors were 'weak' and replaced a few weeks ago. The ACE return pipe which was replaced turns out must be from a V8 and not TD5 (yeh $68 of waste) was replaced with a generic one to stop the leak and kinking as well. Then the handbrake was reconnected, just sort of slipped through the cracks with all the other work.

Had intended to do the VF reinstall to establish some baselines as well but time Saturday got out of control and this will be done later. EF had no problems of course but had hoped to establish some baselines against it.

So today did the practical side of the Proficiency Training through LROV up at the Black Spur and this was surely so enlightening as to 4WDing. Unfortunately the cross axle aspect did not occur as the D2 decided to plant the wheels to the ground on all the areas that this was supposed to occur, ACE got in the way it would appear, the 110 which popped its spring and the limited travel of the Toyota FJ as comparisons. Trial braking training was so interesting and it surely will be used by me from here on, the extra control it allowed on the track was pretty astounding, the GPS hovered between 0 and 4 and the speed so easy to keep down a 7 out 10 track.

Not without drama though. Backing down a hill put the D2 up the side of the hill and must have been only a couple of degrees from roll over, my passenger a well experienced and ex instructor put it 'nearest I have I come to a roll over, ever', yeh it was close! Absolutely exhilarating somewhat but cold hard reality, we are only a simple mistake from disaster at any time we are on the track. The ramp at the initial training was almost heart in mouth but the real world incident, lets just say that caution is now a staple of my driving.

Now more than ever in awe of the D2's capability and the fact that if you have ACE, it is surely an extra layer of capability - should have been standard.

Trial Braking / Driving through the brakes

It is also called driving through the brakes - this is for AUTO's by the way, basically as you crest the hill you apply the brakes (with the left foot) and release partly until you sort of hear the groan of brakes, that is it is JUST being held on the brakes. As the hill is steep, you would be in First Low range of course.

Then applying revs while holding the brake with your left foot maintaining the brake pedal at the same pressure, as you start moving away you are controlling the speed with the accelerator, if you release the accelerator you stop. You should hear the engine 'laboring / working' as you are moving as indicative of correct technique.

If the hill then flattens or becomes steeper again, stop the vehicle and then redo the required pressure to stop as this will increase/decrease, so once you hear the 'groaning' - maintain the pressure (with left foot) and drive through the accelerator again. Foot off accelerator and the car will stop.

It was stressed by the instructor (an official LR instructor by the way) that this is not going to overheat the brakes and vehicles are designed for this.

The other most interesting thing was when leaving river crossing, the chassis is designed to hold an incredible amount of water which should be dumped at the exit not up the track which can amount to tonnes of water being dumped as convoys travel across the rivers.

Doing it through LROV the cost was only $70 with pub lunch and this is well and truly covered by the fact that Club4x4 insurance offer 20% off premiums if you have done this accredited course
