What a blast
Yesterday, fixed the ABS sensor which it turned out had pulled on the tracks the other week. Simple job and replaced with the original from the axle before the Ashcroft's axles and new hub were installed - the new hub sensors were 'weak' and replaced a few weeks ago. The ACE return pipe which was replaced turns out must be from a V8 and not TD5 (yeh $68 of waste) was replaced with a generic one to stop the leak and kinking as well. Then the handbrake was reconnected, just sort of slipped through the cracks with all the other work.
Had intended to do the VF reinstall to establish some baselines as well but time Saturday got out of control and this will be done later. EF had no problems of course but had hoped to establish some baselines against it.
So today did the practical side of the Proficiency Training through LROV up at the Black Spur and this was surely so enlightening as to 4WDing. Unfortunately the cross axle aspect did not occur as the D2 decided to plant the wheels to the ground on all the areas that this was supposed to occur, ACE got in the way it would appear, the 110 which popped its spring and the limited travel of the Toyota FJ as comparisons. Trial braking training was so interesting and it surely will be used by me from here on, the extra control it allowed on the track was pretty astounding, the GPS hovered between 0 and 4 and the speed so easy to keep down a 7 out 10 track.
Not without drama though. Backing down a hill put the D2 up the side of the hill and must have been only a couple of degrees from roll over, my passenger a well experienced and ex instructor put it 'nearest I have I come to a roll over, ever', yeh it was close! Absolutely exhilarating somewhat but cold hard reality, we are only a simple mistake from disaster at any time we are on the track. The ramp at the initial training was almost heart in mouth but the real world incident, lets just say that caution is now a staple of my driving.
Now more than ever in awe of the D2's capability and the fact that if you have ACE, it is surely an extra layer of capability - should have been standard.
