    Turbo blanket

Hi all just have a question about turbo blankets I was wondering if any one has one on a td5. I am wanting to reduce heat under the bonnet I was wondering if the temperature under the bonnet has reduced and are there any unwanted side effects to this blanket thanks.

I have recently fitted one for the purpose of increasing transient performance more than heat reduction. ( See University of Austin study)

My observations are that they certainly decrease underbonnet heat as I was able to comfortably touch my heat shield after 2 hours. However the heat shield still gets quite hot above the exhaust manifold even though I have mine ceramic coated in and out.

Probably wrapping the down pipe from the turbo would also help, but IMHO you don't need heat in the exhaust from a performance standpoint ,as the quicker the heat is dissipated the less back pressure , due to the exhaust gas volume decreasing as the temperature decreases.

On the negative side, I found quite a few reviews of ebay blankets that suggest that they don't last and the stitching fails.

Also the smallest you can get is for a T25 and you have to cut a bit away to clear the wastegate on a GT20.

    Regards Philip A

    I bought mine from here.

T3 BLACK UNDER & OUT LAVA TURBO BLANKET & 5CM X 5M BLACK LAVA HEAT WRAP | eBay

A bit more expensive, but the last 3 purchases from china, I had 2 take over a month and 1 never arrive. So I bought it from Aust. It was sent that day and arrived within 5 days of order.

Quality wise, it looks ok. Well sewn together. I haven't installed it yet though. Not sure of which way to mount it around the modulator. Also I was going to do the exhaust wrap at the same time and thought I would wait until I do an oil change and centrifugal filter change.

Also it only came with 5 cable ties. Which were a bit too short to do the exhaust (150mm long). But Bunnings sell stainless steel ones for I think $50 for a packet of 10 at 350mm (I think).

Can someone post up a pic of how they mounted the cover please.

Does the extra heat trapped in the turbo burn oil or crack turbo housing .
